Random snapshot of a day at Innovative Tuning

We know people think of us for big builds, tuning and racing, but we do our fair share of small installs, repair and diagnostic work too. Here’s what we did yesterday:

Remove aftermarket HID kit and fix wiring to make head lights and fog lights work on 03 Subaru WRX. A shop had wired the HIDs so no other forward facing lights worked and high/low beam controls were backwards.

Defi gauge installs on an 06 Infiniti G35 Coupe. Supercharger kit to be installed shortly once it arrives.

Install K&N intake system on 07 Chevy Tahoe and diagnose CEL for TPS fault found to be related to poor remote starter install done elsewhere.

Oil change and install the appropriate seat belt receptacles on 97 Legacy GT so seat belts function properly after a seat swap was performed elsewhere.

Catalog engine parts with customer in preparation for built dual AVCS Subaru STI long block assembly. Discussed potential issue with water pump and ordered appropriate replacement. Unpack turbine housing and uppipe that just came back from coating.

Review 08 Subaru WRX engine repair status with customer’s warranty company and help them fight for coverage. Vehicle is totally stock.

Diagnose engine noise on 2011 STI. Found a timing belt guide was too tight (from the factory) and wearing the timing belt. Fixed.

Check engine on Voltron after drag strip test. Somehow I still haven’t broken the stock shortblock despite running close to 600 wheel HP for a moment and over 500 for other passes.

Diagnose CEL on 05 Hyundai. Found big evap system leak. Wrong aftermarket gas cap installed which was causing a big evap leak. It was only engaging a few threads and stopping well before the o-ring seal. I hope this was a DIY repair attempt and not from another shop, but we’ll find out.

Diagnose electrical buzzing sound and smoke test 04 Forester XT for leaks to explain poor running and underboosting. Found keyless system “chirper” making the noise. Found intake leaks at inlet hose and fixed them. Found lower uppipe gasket leaking and replaced it. Forester is fixed.

Review logs emailed from customer with 07 WRX. Noted boost creep due to VF39 turbo with catless exhaust in the cold. Emailed updated map files and suggested wastegate porting or EWG to avoid boost creep in the future.

Unpack tubular front subframe and T brace for race car and discuss install procedure with manufacturer.

We have another big day at the shop today so I’ll get back to it. I hope to see you here soon for repairs/installs/tuning!

Awesome that you guys have so much to do!

It must be fun dealing with some of the BS problems people bring to you, bet you see some “interesting” stuff day to day.

Wouldn’t you take the 2011 STI back to the dealer?

Some days we work on big projects all day, some days are all little things like this, most are a mix of the two, but we definitely stay busy thanks to our great customers.

It’s awesome to be the hero that fixes hard to diagnose issues or fixes what another shop screwed up. I like trouble shooting and I know our techs do too.
Of course it’s also nice to be the only shop that works on the car to avoid issues from the start.

ultradriver yup the warranty would cover that issue if the car was stock, but I’ve been in for warranty work enough times to know that for something like this it’s not necessarily worth it. I used to sit all day at the dealer for them to do a 20 minute job. In my case an o2 sensor needed replaced 3 times and every time they had me come in when they opened. I sat there til about 4pm when they finally did it then beat the crap out of my car test driving it. We diagnosed and fixed this issue plus looked into another issue and had the customer out of here in about half an hour.

He also has an intake, exhaust, and tune so the dealer wouldn’t cover a powertrain issue under warranty even though it’s a build quality issue having nothing to do with the mods.

got yah

You left out IanK bitching about being sick

 to innovative! I came in with a cyl 4 misfire on my '06 STi. They diagnosed, performed engine leak down, swapped in new plugs and stock air box and had me on my way the same day! Can’t thank them enough for the quick scheduling and quick turn around. Thanks again guys! Much appreciated.

Hahaaahha no AIDS for Mr Walker in 2013

Also, to Innovative. Its cool to see a local shop doing great business and for fixing Jon B’s car!
