I work for a gigantic international bank with its north american headquarters in chicago that would have made a killing on fee income that would directly impact my bonus with all of the international travelers. So yes I wanted chicago, for selfish reasons.
No, you make the argument that it’s a big economic boom for the host city. History has shown that with extremely rare exceptions it’s nothing but a huge cost. And if you think for one second corruption riddled Chicago could pull off what Atlanta did you’re crazy.

Like I said, I wanted foreign people to come to Chicago and take money out to spend because they’d be doing it at my bank, and if I still work here, which is a big if in 7 years, I’d get a bigger bonus.

The US kind of needed this deal. I’m sure Rio is amazing and all but this hurts us pretty bad IMO. The olympics is SUPER stimulating to the economy of the hosting city as well as the entire country that city is in. Maybe it would help ease the fear of the US economy with foreigners. Not for me so much but meh…I don’t invest in bonds anyhow. 
The Olympics isn’t always a boon for the host city.
