ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A spokesman for The Discovery Channel says the captain of the “Deadliest Catch” fishing vessel Cornelia Marie has died.

Capt. Phil Harris suffered what his family described as a massive stroke on Jan. 29 while the boat was in port at St. Paul Island, Alaska. He was flown to Anchorage for surgery.

A Discovery spokesman says the Harris family contacted the network Tuesday evening with word of his death.

Discovery Channel spokeswoman Elizabeth Hillman issued a statement on behalf of sons Jake and Josh Harris. It says in part, “It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad - Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end.”

The Discovery Channel reality show depicts the crab fishing industry in the dangerous waters off Alaska. Harris’ fishing vessel was based in Seattle.

SUCKS, he was awesome.

That sucks, he was cool but didn’t give a shit about his body and didn’t try to change until it was too late and he was coughing up blood on television. I hated seeing him and his son with cigarettes hanging out of their mouths.

He was good people, too bad he smoked literally one lit off the last. You just can’t do that too your body.

Energy drink after energy drink, ridiculous hours (2-3 hours of sleep every 24), ungodly amounts of stress from deadlines, weather, crew, and family; and the damn coffin nails.

RIP - he genuinely looked like a big-hearted old bear

He was the most un-healthy person I have seen in real life or on TV.

You mean all he did was eat fat, pound energy drinks, smoke a carton a day, not sleep…and he died!?

I guess you dont need to fall off the boat to be killed by that lifestyle.

He was badass and very enjoyable to follow on that show. Sad to see him go RIP

It’s very hard to stay healthy in that kind of lifestyle. Constant stress and sleeplessness. There’s only so much you can do to stay healthy.

Sums it up well.

RIP

I’m sure Discovery will do a fitting tribute episode considering this happened during the crabbing season. The episode they did covering the sinking of the Katmai was probably one of the most real and emotional things I’ve seen on TV.

Do you remember the one season where the guy fell off the one boat and was picked up by the boat the disc. crew was on. I still get chills thinking about that one. Probably one of the most intense things I have ever seen.

Yup, that was a chilling couple of minutes, no pun intended.

This is what real “reality” TV is, not those stupid Survivor shows and whatnot.

Edit: and RIP to Phil, I liked him on that show.

What was really cool was that season the Time Bandit crew was having horrible luck up until that point. They save that guys life and bam, full pots the rest of the trip.

:frowning: rip, captn Phil was my favorite. His sons were such bastards someimes though haha

Definitely RIP…

Though you could have predicted this, given the fact that he already had blood clots in his lungs. It was only a matter of time if he didn’t quit that lifestyle - so his body quit on him.

It’s still too bad, though.

wow that really sucks to hear! i have to say that the deadliest catch is my fav tv show hands down. seemed like a good guy RIP.

its high up there for me too, its not on enough.

I couldnt believe he was still smoking even when his broken ribs punctured his lung and he was coughing up blood.

That was pretty crazy.

i fallow the same diet he does and im still kickass

Fallow?

Now only if the dad from american chopper would bite the bullet
