School me on tow hitches

So my dad just picked up a 2001 Durango and I’m looking to put a hitch on it. It’s mostly going to be used towing my civic. I believe the towing capacity is 5000lbs. I just want to know what class hitch to put on it. I’ve never towed anything myself so this is new to me…thanks

Class III receiver hitch for sure.

Personally, I really like Uhaul’s round tube hitches. I’ve had them on two tow vehicles now and they hold up well and look far better than the ugly square tubing ones from hidden hitch and other manufactures.

My dad had a U-Haul hitch on his ranger way back…he said it held help very well. Do they install the hitch themselves or can I buy it and put it on? The cheaper the better haha. Thanks for the info pal

??

don’t bother posting if you don’t have anything good to say

You can buy just the hitch and install it yourself or have them do it.

Since they’re all vehicle specific I’d suggest just doing it yourself. Most of the time they just bolt right up to existing mount points. Other than having to balance a heavy hitch while you get the bolts started it’s pretty idiot proof. If you have help holding it even easier.

They also carry the wiring harnesses if the truck doesn’t have a plug for lights.

Yeah I figured it would be a pretty straight forward install. I planned on installing it myself anyway…once again thanks for the help.

I found the hitch on the site…$179.95…not too bad of a price.

OK, you need:
-Class III hitch
-Receiver & Ball (Make sure you don’t accidentally buy a receiver with a huge drop since Durango’s aren’t that tall. ~2-3" drop should be about right.)
-Wiring Harness if the vehicle doesn’t already come with one.

I bought my class iii round tube hitch off of ebay for like $120 shipped. We’ll see how it holds up through the winter, but the look/feel suggested good quality. I think I got a reese receiver and ball from someone on Ebay too. The harness came from Nissan though. My truck didn’t come with a tow package so I also had to install a relay under the front passenger kick plate. Do some model specific research to make sure you get the right wiring.

+1 for uhaul hitch. got one on my truck

thanks Fry

I have to take a look at the truck to see if it has a wiring harness, I haven’t had the time to get underneath it and check it out.

I have a curt (or Kurt???) hitch on the Tdi I like it but its just to tow my bikes with…

My dad had a Uhaul hitch on his dakota and it held up vary well he towed a 2500lbs camper with it.
but he had to flip the drop hitch to use it as a raise hitch as his was an 2wd RT

Oh that’s right. I think it actually was a Kurt hitch I got off of ebay. No wonder it felt like it was well made. :stuck_out_tongue:

A hint that won’t be in any of the instruction manuals…

Always remember that receiver solid steal immovable hitch receiver/hitch ball that you’re not used to being there is at a perfect height to destroy your shin. You will remember this post the first time you nail your leg into it.

it also comes in handy when you are backing your car up, and there are small cars behind you.

Just tell the person you were giving them speed holes!

I bought my hitch from
http://www.etrailer.com/
and installed it myself. Its just a couple of bolts, and they have a plug-in wire adapter.
and free shipping over $150. and for the hitch, wires, and ball it was right around that price.

Get an adjustable hitch. You never know what you’re going to be towing now that you have a hitch.

Get a tow hook for the receiver. You’re not going to want to have your hitch in at all times, and the hook is very convenient.

Get a locking pin. If it doesn’t lock, it will be stolen.

Use grease, but not so much that your hands get filthy after putting the hitch in or out.

reese makes great hitches for the price and they install easily 2 people is a plus
