Selling my snowmobile to a Canadian...need info on a legal transaction

My snowmobile auction ends this afternoon. About an hour ago I received an email from a Canadian asking if I would be able to meet him in Canada to deliver the sled. If I were to do so I would make sure that the sled was paid in full, and the money cleared, and that he would cover all taxes related to importing the sled into Canada.

I read this thread, http://nyspeed.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21307&highlight=selling+canada, but not sure if the same rules apply to sleds. Checked the DMV site and didn’t find what I was looking for. Does anyone have a phone number or link to where I could get some more info???

Thanks

your best bet would be to call the boarder.

probably should have the canadian meet you here, and ride back with you.

He might need a broker.

Its leaving the state so NYS DMV wont care. Take it to him and let him deal with the registration through canada. If the border asks tell them your going to a buddies to do some work on it.

No shit? How bout on the way back will they ask ‘wheres the snowmobile’??? For some reason I thought they may make a note of it when I go into Canada…or do I just tell them I’m dropped it off to a friend???

How about when the Canadian goes to register? Would anything come up that says there was no transaction with the US seller??? I thought some taxes or something would have to be made…or at least some kind of customs fee???

Give him a bill of sale and a receipt and let it be. The border isnt gonna care that the sled isnt there, your comming back through us customs not canadien

Just give him all his paperwork and you should be fine. I did the opposite of this and bought a sled from Canada. I just had to pull over at the border and fill out some form and I was on my way, but in your case i assume you dont even have to worry about that since youre selling :gotme:

Cool…thanks guys. Just got off the phone with the winning bidder and I’ll meet them in Canada to hand over the sled:(

May we have a moment of silence for my little 700…

how much did it go for?

$2000…+$100 for my helmet, so $2100 total. About what I was hoping for seeing as I paid $2000 for it 3 years ago. I put in about $900, which included $350 to ship it here and the rest was engine rebuild, seat mod, maintenance, etc.

call www.riv.ca

ask them what the protocal is… they answer the phone quickly.

i believe it is similar to doing the same thing with a car, which i just went through… not hard…

the only additional things i needed beyond the usual was a recall clearance letter from the manufacturer.

nevermind.

GL HF!

Good link, just because customs is 10 minutes from my house I went there last night to get some last minute questions answered.

If I were to bring the sled into Canada, I would have to pay the registration ($205) and GST fees, then get reimbursed by the buyer. Not wanting to front money for them I told the buyer it would be easiest for them to pick up the sled at my house, give me cash, get the bill of sale and registration from me, and be on their way.

Pretty simple. I thought I’d post up a resolution to this should anyone need the info in the future.
