Shelves onto cinder blocks/concrete?

It my garage I need some more workspace and storage, how do I go about mounting some type of plywood shelves?

Get some concrete screws (theyre blue) and screw a 2x4 into the wall and build off of that. Then take a few more 2x4’s and run them from the bottom of the shelves to the floor as a brace.

i know you need a hammer drill, a special bit, those pastic thingies, and then iono.

can buy those at home depot/lowes I assume? how long should they be for cinder blocks? Do I have to drill first?

you can buy the screws at HD or lowes along with a hammer drill and everything else you need for the job. stop by HD and ask one of those guys, they should be able to help you out.

found an interesting how-to: http://www.wikihow.com/Drill-Into-Concrete

Sucks I need a “hammer drill” I really can’t afford it right now and would never use it again.

Get the tapcon NAILS not the screws. They’ll work just as well and you can pick up the tool for them pretty inexpensively too. You use a regular hammer with the tool and it literally shoots the nail into the wood and into the concrete. It uses bullets. Ask someone at Lowe’s or Home Depot and they’ll be able to help you out.

Yeah, they use .22 shells. I did some foundation repair with one of those before.

Im just used to my brothers having all kinds of contractor tools so thats why I said screws.

Yea I figured. I’ve gotta hammer drill and it wasn’t cheap. In a pinch I had to go out and buy the manual one once and it wasn’t very expensive and still did a good job.

I’ve actually used something like that before. I’ll have to check out how much they run for.

I think theyre less than $20. My friend bought one when we fixed his foundation a few years ago.

My brother just sold a few extras he had.

not bad. this should be fun.

Definately open the door and wear earplugs or muffs when using it. Its as loud as a gunshot. My ears were ringing the rest of the day from using it.

I was just about to add that!

these are the way to go… if you get the right pack it even comes with the drill bit (worst case it tells you EXACTLY what bit to get)… You don’t need a hammer drill thats BS. i did mine with an 18v cordless and they went in like butter with a little wd40. This is how i mounted the plywood for my hot water heater.

exactly what wayne said!

Just get a masonry drill bit and masonry screws. Any cheap drill will work.

DeckMate makes AWESOME screws. They come with their own bit that never slips out. Not sure if they make masonry screws, but get them if they do.

+1 for Tapcon screws w/ pilot hole. Never used Tapcon nails.

TAPCON nails used in the hammer gun can split the block in some cases if the block is old. They’re best used for concrete.

use Tapcon concrete screws and an electric drill with the appropriate sized hex driver bit. It’s all you need. Lag a few boards to the wall as mentioned and just build the bench frame off that. Put legs to the floor. Top with ply or MDF board

tapcon bit driver, its the tapcon driver and concrete drill bit all in one, and you dont need a hammer drill for it

sounds easy enough, I’ll be stopping by home depot a little later today.
