Is there a separate water system to cool the alternator? Or do they run hot coolant through it?

Nope, engine coolant is all that’s used. Figure a 150A alternator is going to get a lot hotter than 200 degrees in most cases.

before i did under drive pullies on my SHO I was replacing them after every auto cross. it is only a 120amp but gets crazy hot. I can attest to the head a alt makes at high rpm.

I didn’t realize heat is such a concern for alternators. I have never noticed my alternator getting anywhere past ambient engine bay temps… Maybe if you were always bouncing off rev limiter they get hot?
