What did your Macbook Pro cost for what specs? The new Dell XPS 15z I just picked up for $900 with a 3 year @home warranty looks just like a Macbook Pro and runs circles around any under $1500. (QC i7, 8GB, 750GB HD, 2GB Nvidia card, 1080p screen)
I have no use for Mac OS so I haven’t looked into it but I’m pretty sure people are hackintoshing them with no issues as well.

The one I just ordered for work was 1600 4gb/13inch air/256 SSD
OSX is key for me since its BSD based with a pretty front end and a ton of apps I also use the CLI for python/ruby/c on a daily basis…I don’t like running FreeBSD/Linux/Whatever for my primary OS.
My macbook pro was intel core 2 duo I think i for a Apple refurb for 1000?ish

My experience is based on using every laptop under the sun in my IT career and dealing with people who have used every kind also.
I could just be getting lucky with my Mac products who knows? Every Android product I have got for work has sucked multiple phone issues I have never had with my iPhone…I have blown up/broke Dells/IBMs/Acers etc
I’m not too familiar with the air because I hate small laptops. Even my 14.1 Lenovo for work pisses me off. 1600 still seems really steep though even with a big SSD.
The Pro’s are way overpriced though, no way around that. I’ll take worse build quality if I know that they will be at my house the next day to fix it if it breaks, for the next 3 years. (Plus 1 extra year for buying with an AMEX) If you need to use Mac OS, I understand, but the OS license and logo on the top are costing you $500.

I like the option that you can tell each program whether to run with dedicated or integrated graphics when on battery.
Oh I also forgot to add the battery life on my Macbook destroys every other laptop I have/had
When I was at TWC I had a i7 dell loaded it was over $2000 and it sucked 
I blame part of that on corp software but even the battery was meh
In the end I don’t care what anyone else does I know what works well for me.
Word. I just want to punch babies every time I see some chick waste an extra grand on a Mac to play FarmVille and write papers because it looks cool or “it just works.”
Dell’s build quality is crap, couldn’t agree more. I wouldn’t be able to deal with the touchpads and keyboards.
I have a Lenovo T400. It’s a VERY solidly built laptop, but it’s also $1500. We never really had the option for a Mac, but as of the past year or so they’ve changed their tune. My next work machine will definitely be a Macbook Pro. For now, I will continue on with Fedora on my Lenovo. I had to replace the battery on it recently. They got me a 9-cell battery. Things lasts forever.
LZ, have you gotten your hands on a Galaxy Nexus? They’re super solid, and with the a bug fix update around the corner it will be even better.
The T400 is my work laptop I was bitching about and that I’ve had in 4-5 times this year for random issues LOL…it really is luck of the draw with any manufacturer
luck of the draw? eehhh. A lot of people around the office are pretty big fans of the Lenovos that we have been running. Sounds like you got a random lemon. Lenovo’s business lines are rock solid. Again, they’re pricey though. They’re not a sub $1k machine.
I opted not to get a work cell phone…I was sick of having two cell phones I have a VoIP desk phone at home and all is great.
