Streaming 360 with media center? *update: connection problems*

I tried getting it working, unsuccessfully, over the weekend. I have a few questions about it.

How does it stream High Deff content? Can it stream DRM content? For instance, can I stream blueray movies from my computer to the xbox?

and do you have it hardwired, or are you doing it via wifi?

I just set mine up with my new vista PC.

I’m using the lan, not wifi. Seems pretty sweet so far.

I haven’t tried to stream bluray yet … it’s definitely on my list though.

thanks man.

so have you tried streaming any kind of highdeff movies on it yet? (even avi’s or wmv’s)

I’m wondering if there is enough bandwidth (at least over wifi)

Hmm I stream movies…I will try something HD when I get home…

thanks man

ok i do it all the time steve.

In order to stream you needd to dl the media center extender and install it to the pc, and then let the xbox find your pc.

Once that is done, if you DL WMV movies from the newsgroups they are usually BRD converted to wmv. They look just like the source.

Or you can download the full brd under a x264 format which you would need to convert it to WMV, doing it this way provides more flexibility and allows you to add/remove different things, It does take about 8 hours to transcode it this way tho, but its worth it imo. I have the links at home i can send you, but its really simple and all the programs needed i have.

You CANNOT stream BRD directly as the xbox will not recognize the BRD extension. The xbox does not know what a MKV file is.

Also, what did u try doing, and what didnt work?

Kinda different, but I stream movies, music, etc to my PS3 from my Vista PC and over the wifi I found that there wasn’t enough bandwidth when doing HD stuff, I switched to a wired connection and everything is much smoother.

really? that freaking blows.

Would Vista work though I wonder? Media center natively supports BRD/hd-dvd content in vista if I’m not mistakin.

I know you don’t need the extender software with vista, but you do with xp. I’ll try it later, I don’t have the patience to wait to decode all of my movies lol (nor the hard drive space).

I’ll let you know what I find out

9c1, thanks man… that’s what I wanted to know. Wired it is

U have to use extender doesn’t matter if vista sees it, its the xbox that doesn’t support it.

Just download WMVs then, like i said they are mostly BR movies already done for the lazy

how big are they though? that really sucks… that would of been awesome to use the pc as a brd player without needing a 60" HDMI cable.

bummer

Vista isn’t going to fix this problem, as the 360 is actually going to be doing the decoding. The media center just provides a clean interface to stream the files.

I’ve been doing it for about a year now w/ vista ultimate. My Desktop is on Wireless-N, while the 360 is hard wired. While i do sometimes have issues, it’s usually with music where it hangs for a little while, trying to list the 5k+ songs…

Also, over that setup (wireless…) i have been able to stream WMVHD movies no problem.

Just build a HTPC if your that concerned.

The wmv movies are like 8 gig, thats nothing, i get them so fast it doesnt matter that they are that big, the BRD movies are double that.

as stated above

I just built a HTPC instead

can you PM the specs and what you built?

Im kinda interested to see your setup as i might be building one.

well here is my main problem (maybe it’s not that bad).

My PC is pretty much already an HTPC. I use HDMI to connect my monitor and have to use another cable for sound to run it to my speakers.

Is there some sort of patch I can apply to get sound out of HDMI or do I need a new vid card? the 8800gt’s are supposed to support it but doesn’t. That way I would only need 1 cable running to the TV opposed to 3.

the pc will either be in another room, or accross the living room when I get my desk moved in here.

you have a PM kevin

Here is the link I used to piece mine together.

I built mine as a budget rig to see how I like it. Depending on how it goes it may be expanded upon, or replaced down the line.

Plus two 250GB SATA drives that I already had.

Thats a nice little HTPC setup walter, I’d been debating on putting one together for a couple years now.

I really liked the AIW aspect of the Mobo, from what I’ve read it does a great job with just about everything, and it has all the right outputs. The case is good, but not perfect (questions w/ the VFD and IR) but items I can live with given the price point.

I haven’t figured out what I’m going to do SW and front end wise yet though. I may try Vista as that seems the most popular :cough:Kevin:cough:

I do it on wireless w/ XP. No problems, all my downloaded movies work and look great.
