In order to stream you needd to dl the media center extender and install it to the pc, and then let the xbox find your pc.
Once that is done, if you DL WMV movies from the newsgroups they are usually BRD converted to wmv. They look just like the source.
Or you can download the full brd under a x264 format which you would need to convert it to WMV, doing it this way provides more flexibility and allows you to add/remove different things, It does take about 8 hours to transcode it this way tho, but its worth it imo. I have the links at home i can send you, but its really simple and all the programs needed i have.
You CANNOT stream BRD directly as the xbox will not recognize the BRD extension. The xbox does not know what a MKV file is.
Kinda different, but I stream movies, music, etc to my PS3 from my Vista PC and over the wifi I found that there wasn’t enough bandwidth when doing HD stuff, I switched to a wired connection and everything is much smoother.
Would Vista work though I wonder? Media center natively supports BRD/hd-dvd content in vista if I’m not mistakin.
I know you don’t need the extender software with vista, but you do with xp. I’ll try it later, I don’t have the patience to wait to decode all of my movies lol (nor the hard drive space).
I’ll let you know what I find out
9c1, thanks man… that’s what I wanted to know. Wired it is
Vista isn’t going to fix this problem, as the 360 is actually going to be doing the decoding. The media center just provides a clean interface to stream the files.
I’ve been doing it for about a year now w/ vista ultimate. My Desktop is on Wireless-N, while the 360 is hard wired. While i do sometimes have issues, it’s usually with music where it hangs for a little while, trying to list the 5k+ songs…
Also, over that setup (wireless…) i have been able to stream WMVHD movies no problem.
well here is my main problem (maybe it’s not that bad).
My PC is pretty much already an HTPC. I use HDMI to connect my monitor and have to use another cable for sound to run it to my speakers.
Is there some sort of patch I can apply to get sound out of HDMI or do I need a new vid card? the 8800gt’s are supposed to support it but doesn’t. That way I would only need 1 cable running to the TV opposed to 3.
the pc will either be in another room, or accross the living room when I get my desk moved in here.
I really liked the AIW aspect of the Mobo, from what I’ve read it does a great job with just about everything, and it has all the right outputs. The case is good, but not perfect (questions w/ the VFD and IR) but items I can live with given the price point.
I haven’t figured out what I’m going to do SW and front end wise yet though. I may try Vista as that seems the most popular :cough:Kevin:cough:
