Turbo died. Ball bearing next?

where do u spool at now? is the extra money for a bb center worth the few hundred rpm quicker spool? thats what you need to look at. will make same hp w/ normal bearing as you would bb, just the bb will bring you into the “useable” power band quicker. i didnt get a bb center, but i expect my powerband to go from 4500 to 8500/9k, or a 4k/4500 margin… if i was only spinning to 7500/7000, then having my turbo up to life by 4k would be in my best interests because a useable range of 3k to 3500 kinda sucks. follow what im saying?

that was my second argument but i really didn’t care to post it

Yes. And you’ll gain more than a “few” hundred RPMs. Mine was at least 500 rpms sooner. If you dont think thats a big deal, do a highway pull against a ball bearing turbo car… and after he’s already 3-4 cars ahead, and youre just coming into boost - you’ll see my point.

On the 240 I went from T-28 ballbearing which was an incredibly responsive turbo, instantly in boost. Then to a standard t3/t4 turbo which sucked ass. And then back to a Ballbearing GT30R. And even thought the 30R was a much larger turbo, it completely destroyed the t3/t4 in boost response.

I’m not recommending these turbos because i want to see him spend more money. Im saying it because I’ve had both, and in my mind there is no question. Ballbearing all the way.

geah!

i dont’ know how you guys drive but i’ was NEVER out of the boost on that 50 trim when i raced it and it didnt’ hit full spool till 4.5k(25lbs) i launched higher than that, i shifted faster than that, and if i was gayrollracing i still was in the boost without problems

so what… if ball bearing brings on power sooner, it brings on power sooner… wahtever you dealt with is of no relevance… k?

20PSI by 4200, 25-26PSI isn’t much later. Maybe 4500 for full boost in a third gear punch, and recovery in between gears isn’t a problem. 8,250 rev limit, but I don’t touch it in third/fourth since my stock intake kills airflow up top. Once I get my intake manifold in, I’ll most likely be shifting at 8 grand every gear. A 4k-8k powerband would be very nice.

There would be no need to go bigger than a 35R at this point, and the reasoning for the ball bearing would be I can get ball-bearing stuff (PTE, not Garrett) discounted. If I did go PTE, I’d do another 60-1 setup, with another T31 exhaust wheel to help spool time. I don’t see any reason to go T350 exhaust wheel. Plus, I’ll be stepping up in turbine housing size, which will slow spool slightly, but also put out a bit more up top.

Then again, I wonder if people have surge issues with a T04E housing, 60-1/T31 and a ball bearing CHRA? Something else to look into I guess.

Like I said, I have plenty of time to decide. I won’t be buying another turbo until the Spring.

how can you bring on power sooner than already being in power? what does it matter when your turbo spools if you never see it? why complain about a normal bearing’d turbo spooling 500 rpms later than a bb if it doesn’t matter…point is fuck BB and DBB

that 3g silver one was sitting out wrecked for a while, and when they fixed it they put in in the same spot so he prob never checked it out again when driving by and just assumed, i know i did

A. Not everyone drives a honda and revs to 8K+
B. This is why you get a DBB turbo:

Okay, you’re right everyone else is wrong. Ballbearing turbos are completely useless. We run them just because we like to spend more money. We should all just run 50 trims. 50 trims are the coolest. Damn I love 50 trims.

ballbearing turbos make a huge difference man

yeah cuz i totally said that.
