i “liked” Milky Way scientists on facebook and they usually post some awesome pictures from around the earth that people submit. same type of thing
http://www.facebook.com/Milkyway.Nasa.115943216485228220871

I would tend to agree with this. But, awesome pics none-the-less.

Very cool

The giant cave is my favorite

I think these places look amazing and are probably even better in person…

“pictures don’t do it justice” kinda thing…

I’d go with that^^

excellent post

Awesome

The pictures are awesome, but the stories behind them are just as cool; how they were formed, etc.

The Door to Hell for example isn’t a natural formation:

The Derweze area is rich in natural gas. While drilling in 1971, Soviet geologists tapped into a cavern filled with natural gas.[1] The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of 70 metres (230 ft) at 40°15′10″N 58°26′22″E. To avoid poisonous gas discharge, it was decided the best solution was to burn it off.[2] Geologists had hoped the fire would use all the fuel in a matter of days, but the gas is still burning today. Locals have dubbed the cavern “The Door to Hell”.[3]

Wonder how long I could have heated my house with the natural gas this burn is wasting? 100000 years? 1000000?

Don’t worry, the amount that’s been burning in that hole since the 70’s is only a fraction of the amount of natural gas released naturally around the world, in the oceans, etc. There is likely more natural gas seeping out of the ground in all of NYS in one year than this hole has burned up in its lifetime.

^ Also depressing when I look at my National Fuel bill each month.

damn those are amazing!
