Uprgrade Honda Axle recomendations??

Hey everyone, this is a question for the people running upgraded axles in their Hondas specifically, but any FWD import really. Drive Shaft Shop, Gators…ect? What are you running?? How do you like them?? How much did you spend?? Where did you get them??

I would keep them stock. Which would you rather break an axle or a transmission?

i got one pass on stock axles, and i really didnt enjoy paying $20 for one pass. So im going to do some research and gather some opinions. 1 vote for stock

I’m running stock, Joe’s was running stock, then upgraded into axle hell. I’m staying stock for the simple reason that they’re like a fuse…I think it’s better to keep 6 spares laying around and have a $50 15 minute repair and get back racing than break a trans in half…

Heres my input on it,
OEM axles are great. (not pep boys) OEM
They lasted me years no problem
I got a good deal on some stage 3’s brand new with hubs and it poped out of my spool and stripped the axle and spool…some have problem with DSS poping out Eric from hybrid has that problem too his might be resolved by now but IDK

I would say if your in it for the fun, find some OEM axles from the junk yard… run them and have some spares, only take like 5 min to change with the right tools

last season i messed up 1 axle due to no grease. over 100 passes most of them on BFG DR’s witch are harder on axles/trannys then slicks

also many 1.63 60’s on slicks

maybe thats the problem im having, seriously no joke ive been through 6 sets of axles. 1 set honda oem and 3 sets of powerline remans and 2 sets of GSP from advance auto. Ill look around for some OEM axles i have only broken one set of them and they had 70k miles on them…any recomendation where to look for OEM Honda axles besides Dealership?

I second everything Justin and Joe are saying. There are lots of high hp drag honda’s out there running stock axles. They can hold a decent amount of power and with break BEFORE your tranny.

Different aftermarket companies DSS, Gator, new Omni titanium, and others have a hit and miss functionality. They frequently have spline interface issues, balance problems, sometimes even CV length issues which will throw your susp geometry way off. They are far more pricey and tougher to replace (time-wise) and if too strong…will blow your tranny.

If your axle onle lasted one pass, you had a pre-existing issue. Something was ready to give before you got there. If all was well with the car you would have last much longer than that. Too many people run out and buy part without understanding exactly what caused the problem in the first place. Not putting you down, just trying to save you headache/money.

x2 & I run slicks when racing. I have DR’s but they’re only for street use. I was going to try them on the track but it’s just not worth it when I have slicks.

Well like I said, the axles that broke were advance auto GSP not OEM Honda’s and they had about 1 hour on them befor I went to the track, so pretty much fresh. I had the alignment shop adjust my coilovers to put the best angle on the CV’s. And got it realigned after that. The front end wheel bearings and ball joints have about 20k miles on them, and I just replaced the carrier bearing about 5k miles ago. Is there anything else you guys can think of that should be addressed?? Or is it just my driving habbits that need some changing lol! I am used to old muscle cars that dont break so easy (not a bash on imports)

Well, there are lots of problems with those Autoaone/PepBoy’s axles being inferior. Some guys run them due to the replacement guarantee alone. I have no idea how those guys don’t mind changing alxes constantly.

How is the vibration at speed? Cheaper axles tend not to be balanced very well, regardless of alignment. I say pick up a set of used OEM axles for now.

Your launching technique, exacerbated by slicks may have been the death knell. Seen that situation many times.

any tips on launching

yes i have noticed the balance def is not as good as OEM but like you said was just running them for the lifetime garantee.

Ask Joe about his launching technique. If he can launch his monster without braking shit, I doubt someone else can answer with more authority. I don’t drag…except ass that is.

I assume you can feel the unbalanced shafts? Can you feel it in the steering wheel.

Thanks man.

The biggest key is to get the car rolling before you apply all the power. when i say rolling i mean even 1/2 turn of the tire.

are you prelaoding the car? don’t just dump the driveline. tighten everything up before you let it rip.

I borked up axles dumping and sidestepping…I find a nice smooth release of the clutch while going to full throttle works best for our cars.

thanks for all the advice, now ill have to try and aply it lol
