What’s a 1.8t bottom end worth? I know a kid that has a 2001 Jetta, broke the timing belt and is replacing the entire engine with a used one. The bottom end if fine other than a few “eyebrows” on each piston from the valve contact.
What’s a good bottom end worth, considering it’s coming out of an otherwise junked engine? Just trying to get an idea about the value and market for these things, he says “offer me what you think it’s worth” and I wanna know hte market a little bit before I do my bidding…h
although… a bottom end for a 1.8t isn’t he expensive part… the head is wahts is $$… i’d low ball him, as he doesn’t have an idea of what it’s worth. let me search around.
Why? Do you really think the pressure exerted on the connecting rod bearings (I assume that’s which ones you mean) from a valve contacting the piston is greater than that created during peak cylinder pressure during combustion? I really don’t think so. As long as the oil pump was still being driven (I’m not familiar w/ a 1.8T’s oiling system… as long as the pump is crank driven or driven some way other than via the cams and or timing belt) and oil pressure was maintained why would the bearings be bad?
The bearings are probably fine. Keep in mind that the valves that get bent in these egines are tiny. It’s an 81mm bore with 3 intake valves and 2 ex valves so it doesn’t take much energy to tweak one. It’s a risk, of course, but any used engine is. For the most part, the bottom ends are good to go in these cases and hopefully, damned cheap as it’s a “junked” engine. I’ll certainly be talking about it like it’s a POS as I negotiate this one…
Betrayed, no, not me. I’m out in Ligonier.
