Watching movies on TV from external HD

Is your TV very new? A lot of newer TV’s have provisions for internet access and are compatible with an industry standard media sharing thing. It’s how I watch downloaded movies on my TV. My TV and computer are no the same network, so I just enabled network sharing on the movie folder on my computer and the TV can see the network shares. No special hardware or software necessary.

Convert it to multicast shoot it around your home network and watch it with VLC.

I didn’t read all of this, but I have a samsung Bluray player and I have used a flash drive via USB and my cellphone via USB as external drives to watch movies. This is the approach that I recommend as the player was sub $150 and I get a blueray, Netflix, and movies from my flash drive.

Yea even really cheap DVD players have USB inputs now I grabbed one for like $40-50

This

I have one of these that plays divx, I burn a dldvd-r with 8 or so movies on it and I’m good for a while

Do you have cable, FIOS, or dish?

I know with Dish Network in particular you can connect a external HD to their HD DVR receiver and move stuff and watch things off the HD very easily. The other providers have to have something similar by this point.

I have had no problems with playback, I rip lots a blu-ray movies at full 1080p and DTS HD audio and all playback fine

also something to look into is the logitec revue, right now its the same price at apple tv and does a lot more.

The Logitech Media Player supports many different file types, including:
Audio

MP3 - MPEG-1 Layer 3
MP4 - AAC
M4A - AAC
OGG - Vorbis (Only when a USB device is connected to Revue)

Video (Currently in Beta)

MKV - H.264/AVC
FLV - H.264/AVC, H.263
MTS/MT2S/TS - H.264/AVC
AVI - H.264/AVC, DivX MPEG4, XVid MPEG4

new version of google tv is suppose to be out by end of September and be a lot faster and more stable than the current version

My jailbroken apple tv let you hook up USB but you needed to convert micro usb to female usb to make it happen

I downloaded tversity ( http://tversity.com/ ) turn my computer on open the program tell it what file format I want the program to output walk downstairs turn the PS3 on and watch top gear on my 65". 1080P perfect quality. My PS3 is hardwired to my network. I was having intermittent streaming issues with the PS3 on wireless. It is a free program and will take about 20 min to get setup. I imagine it will work with X-box as well. The program streams directly to the TV in my bedroom as well and I also have that TV hardwired to my computer via HDMI. I didn’t notice any difference in quality between the program and the direct HDMI link from my computer. I don’t know what the programs requirements are when it is converting file types at full quality but the PS3 is a picky bitch when it comes to what file types it will let you watch.

I have a dish DVR reciever… anyone have more info on this? It seems too easy

Buy this.

thats why i bought a dune, pch not cutting it anymore for me.

Actually reading this, I’m not so sure you can record stuff off the computer and watch it on the TV. It doesn’t say you can’t but doesn’t say you can either…
