Well, after Gurn did my engine swap in the GLX, I found myself having a spare VR6 motor & transmission. I started thinking as to what I could do with these. I was on Facebook one night & saw this video:[ame=“http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yt1vcH9nC2o”]Black Forest Industries: Project MK1 VR6 Rabbit - YouTube[/ame] & everything clicked. I’ve always had a love for the MK1/MK2 Rabbits/GTI so I figured since I hate winter I might as well find something to keep me occupied. So began my search for a GTI. I wanted something that was fairly complete, not rotted all to hell & cheap. After a few weeks of searching I stumbled upon this gem in Turners Falls, MA.
Here’s the deal; it’s a 1984 GTI 1.8 5 speed with some little goodies done to it. The guy I bought it from bought it from a gentleman who used the car for autocross so she’s lowered on Billsteins, has a Mono steering wheel, a Eurosport crossbar, intake, bolted in roll cage. Race car status. The guy I bought it from had recently done the floors & put a basically whole new exhaust on it, however he gave up working on it after the state of MA failed the car come inspection time for no back seat & a non factory exhaust. It has the red interior in it but the back half is gone, the seats are ripped, the dash is brittle. Needless to say she needs love.
My plans are fairly simple:
-Rip the old 1.8 out (Gurn has dips) & swap in the VR6
-Strip & repaint the whole car (looking at doing it beige)
-Whole new black interior (already purchased black door cards)
-Throw my BBS RS reps on it (hooray for uni-lug)
-Cabby short tail lights (already purchased)
-Wire Tuck
-Beat the crap out of it
I’m pretty excited to do this build. I really want to challenge myself & do a nice paint job. Learned a lot working on my old CRX but definitely have a lot to improve on. Here’s a few pics from when I picked it up. Let me know what you guys think!
