What Have I Gotten Myself Into?

Well, after Gurn did my engine swap in the GLX, I found myself having a spare VR6 motor & transmission. I started thinking as to what I could do with these. I was on Facebook one night & saw this video:[ame=“http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yt1vcH9nC2o”]Black Forest Industries: Project MK1 VR6 Rabbit - YouTube[/ame] & everything clicked. I’ve always had a love for the MK1/MK2 Rabbits/GTI so I figured since I hate winter I might as well find something to keep me occupied. So began my search for a GTI. I wanted something that was fairly complete, not rotted all to hell & cheap. After a few weeks of searching I stumbled upon this gem in Turners Falls, MA.

Here’s the deal; it’s a 1984 GTI 1.8 5 speed with some little goodies done to it. The guy I bought it from bought it from a gentleman who used the car for autocross so she’s lowered on Billsteins, has a Mono steering wheel, a Eurosport crossbar, intake, bolted in roll cage. Race car status. The guy I bought it from had recently done the floors & put a basically whole new exhaust on it, however he gave up working on it after the state of MA failed the car come inspection time for no back seat & a non factory exhaust. It has the red interior in it but the back half is gone, the seats are ripped, the dash is brittle. Needless to say she needs love.

My plans are fairly simple:
-Rip the old 1.8 out (Gurn has dips) & swap in the VR6
-Strip & repaint the whole car (looking at doing it beige)
-Whole new black interior (already purchased black door cards)
-Throw my BBS RS reps on it (hooray for uni-lug)
-Cabby short tail lights (already purchased)
-Wire Tuck
-Beat the crap out of it

I’m pretty excited to do this build. I really want to challenge myself & do a nice paint job. Learned a lot working on my old CRX but definitely have a lot to improve on. Here’s a few pics from when I picked it up. Let me know what you guys think!

I got a kinetic stage 2 turbo kit for the vr6

I may be interested at some point down the road for the Jetta. Right now, I just want to leave a stock motor VR6 in the Wabbit.

Took some pics today. Sadly have to head into work in a few so can’t do much with her today. We’ll call these the “before” shots. Pics are going to be big, don’t have the patience or time to resize them.

And when you’re steering wheel doesn’t have a horn button, install an air horn haha.

My old supervisor had an old, 1981 I want to say, Rabbit diesel. Thing was awesome. In for updates.

Looks very promising- I’m looking forward to see how this turns out sir!

nice i cant wait to see the after

Been busy starting the process of swapping over everything from the GLX to a new clean shell I bought from Gurn on Roflwagens (more to come on that) so really haven’t had time to mess with the GTI. I did, however, just get some original ads for the car off Ebay. Figured they’d be cool to have on the wall for now & I’ll eventually bring them with the car to shows. Once the new mk3 is all set, I’ll be getting going on this.
