Albany County will not offer its annual ‘Safe Ride’ program this New Year’s Eve.
Sheriff James Campbell and Staff Sgt. Leonard Crouch, administrator of the county’s Stop DWI program, said they could not secure enough transportation to ensure rides for everyone who requested them. The county sought bids from transportation companies for 25 vehicles, but received a response from just one company offering only 15 vehicles.
“The county cannot offer a program and face the realization of not being able to effectively deliver the services,” Campbell said this mornng in a statement.
Campbell said 961 people took advantage of the program last year, and with 21 vehicles in service, delays in getting rides were as long as two hours.
Crouch pointed out that the law firm of Martin, Harding and Mazzotti is again providing free rides this year around the Capital Region. He said those rides can be arranged by call 800-529-1010.
The Schenectady County Stop DWI Program said today it will sponsor its Safe Ride Home program for a 24th year. Schenectady County residents can received a free taxi ride home between 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 5 a.m. on New Year’s Day by calling 374-4101.
The Schenectady County program is sponsored and funded by the Stop DWI program in partnership with Central Brown and Blue & White taxis. The program is paid for with fines collected from driving while intoxicated convictions.
