I ended up going FIOS. And after that dropped all their equipment, put in my own gigabit router, and use a cablecard with an HDHomeRun Prime. Oh how things have changed since this thread.
FYI: anybody on roadrunner who wants to avoid the fee can just switch to earthlink (service covered by roadrunner). You’ll probably pay less with your new promo rate and they don’t charge for modem rental. It’s all done as a soft transfer, I didn’t even have to reboot my modem. Billing any everything is done through time warner.
I’m current on a $29 promo rate for the 10 down service.

I bought the simple black Motorola speedstream or something from Best Buy. It was like $60 bucks.

I’ve been using a RCA cable modem that I bought on ebay. Says Comcast on it, I paid 19 dollars. I used it for 3 years with no troubles before I got fios.
I since then gave it to a buddy so that he can save 5 bucks or whatever off his bill.
