do you sand between coats or do you strip and stain? What’s the process?
i believe the person who did my floor used a flat belt sander type. and went perpendicular to the planks creating a seemless floor. but the only down fall to this was they put only 2 coats of polyurethe…and there are still some spots that needs to be retouched. i might end up re-coating each room once at a time.
I did my whole house upstairs and down stairs before i moved in and it came out beautiful…here is a quick shot.
Took an entire Saturday. Lots of dust but it wasn’t terrible. IIRC the sander had a dust bag.
The process is sand down to bare wood with heavy grit, putty gaps between the planks, sand smoother with medium grit, smoothest with fine grit, stain, urethane, hand sand with fine grit, urethane, hand sand with fine grit, urethane.
woaaaa, i never installed any kinda cheap fake pergo crap in my house. I installed engineered hardwood which is way different and alot nicer. any how, i had hardwood flooring under my carpet that i ripped out and i didnt feel like sanding it down to bare nothin and starting over so i scuffed the floor up realy good with sand paper by hand and then wiped/cleaned it up realy good to rid of dust and sandings. then I bought some cherry 2in1 poly/stain from home depot and did 1 coat. after 1st coat dried i took some very fine steal wool and buffed the surface for any imperfections then i cleaned it and added another coat to darken/richen the first coat of cherry. after it dried the floors looked great and the cherry realy helps to hide any hardwood imperfections cuz its a dark shade. I did this a few years ago and its still going strong to today with my animals and computer chair and stuff tearing across it.
my floors were prolly in same condition as pictured. If you decide to go with a lighter shade you may not be as happy with the results as i was. total process cost me 2-3 cans of minwax 2in1 poly and stain for 2 bedrooms and about a weekend with couple hours of prep each day.
good luck
Ha. My bad. I assumed “engineered hardwood” was fake wood.
yea, this is the stuff i used when i did it. was 5.50 or something a few years ago, looks like the price has come down a bit.
Engineered hardwood is a THIN layer of real wood on top of a lower-layer.
A big downside is that it cannot be sanded and refinished since it’s so thin.
↑ Thats not true, there are some and most they make now you can sand three times.
honestly i cant see how or why it would ever be necessary in the first place because the engineered hardwood has a much harder treated surface then regular hardwood. Its “engineered” to last longer then regular hardwood. My pitbull tears across it all day long and you would never know. this is why i opted to go with the engineered over the regular hardwood. But yea, it can be sanded down a few if needed. When i was cutting this stuff my chop saw blade was spitting sparks, lol. def some tuff shit.
I’m sure all of the things mentioned above are based on the quality of what you buy. I mentioned it as a general rule of thumb.
hardwood is stupid to do if you have a pet. We used a vynl glue down floor in our house. It looks like real wood, and kind of feels like real wood. We actually had hardwood floors but did this over them. It’s a lot more durable
110lbs german shepard will fuck your hardwoods up lol. especially when he runs around like a retard 13 hours a day
Just scuff it up with some 80 grit, then 120 grit and brush some stain/poly mix over it. It won’t be as good as going down to bare floor, but it’ll be easier and cheaper than refinishing the whole joint. PM me if you need the floor color matched. I sell this shit 6days a week.

That shit does NOT look anything like real wood.
Yes because you have seen my floor right?
No because I’ve seen them all and I deal with hardwood floors everyday. Suzie homemaker may think it’s real but anyone who has seen a real hardwood floor knows its not real.
Alright well next time you want to lay 6000 feet of hardwood floor for free let me know and we can take all of it out and put in hardwood
Relax, I didn’t say it was bad, just stated it doesn’t look like hardwood.
lol i know it doesnt, but it looks closer than pergo. it was early in the morning, i was mad lol
