Would you buy a Hurricane Sandy car?

Looks like there is going to be a flood (pun intended) of cars coming from downstate NY and NJ with slight to severe flood damage from Hurricane Sandy. There might be some great part-out opportunities or even deals…

the insurance companies that own the cars hope to sell most of them to new owners who could fix them up and put them back on the road. Most of the cars are fairly new, Walter said.

^^ that’s 15,000 cars right there.

Oh look, a $45 R8: Search - IAA

Tons of cars here.

Our top news story this evening…rogue monster truck owners takes advantage of 15,000 cars lined up in a row and makes his wildest dream come true.

Who cares about that R8. Look at that magnificent beige Camry.

Porsche 911 track car anyone?

You could pick up a great start/donor for a locost here…

I’d be all over one! I’m not afraid.

I was looking at one from New Jersey this morning. The owner claimed his insurance agent said it could be sold with a clear title. I find that hard to believe.

I’ll probably end up with one through an online salvage dealer for the engine/trans swap on my bird.

If you’re the idiot that buys a flood salvaged R8, then you better hope you keep it forever, because I don’t think you’ll ever sell it.

Saltwater flooded car? No thanks! Maybe someone will end up with my old xterra or my parents’ 3 month old qx56 that was ruined.

that has got to suck to be a car dealer when this sort of thing happens. All of your inventory and equipment is destroyed

Don’t ask me for a ride then when I do this:

At a low enough price you can part that shit out and get a good buck.

X…

Agreed, unless your gonna part it. All the electronics are shot. I buy salvage cars and I’d never touch a flood car let along a salt water flood

I’ll pass…

I was reading a thread about this elsewhere. The reason that you saw pictures of these cars during the flood with windows down and trunks open is because the water+electrical just makes everything go crazy. That is probably why the spoiler is popped on that R8. Insurance adjusters were trying to power them up to check the odometers and having airbags go off when they turned the key. They’re good for some parts and nothing else. I saw a few classics that might be restorable due to their simplicity/value but that’s about it. I’m sure some will end up on a boat to somewhere to be fixed and sold though.

I don’t think i’d be running to a fresh water salvage car either.

Fuck. That. Shit. I’d rather contract bird flu then part out a car. Everyone wants something until it’s time to pay up. “Yo broski, I need this and that.” And then that’s the last time you hear from the fggt. Oh, you want money for it, not I come over and bring you beer? I’d rather have a BMW logo tatooed on my back that goes from shoulder blades to my waist then part a car.

Estimated Repair Cost:$98,395

the rims have to be worth 1k??? body panels could be saved??? that has to be some decent money…worth the risk, most likely not

not to mention all the people down there beat the living shittt out of their cars anyways

lol… the R8 already has a pre-bid of $45k.
