Despite my love for VW I would recommend against a $3-4k VW, unless you want to constantly be fixing stuff instead of getting nookie.
Get her a GA16 200SX. 40mpg, reliable at that price, and most girls would probably like it.

despite the wrath against the veedubs, i have over 2k into since the first of the year, pretty much everything is done, headgasket, chains, studs, all hoses, alignment, doing a wheel bearing thursday night, power steering pump, serp belt, clutch, i could go on and on. you honestly wouldn’t have to do any mechanical work on her for a long time.
