Bass Pro is a go

not a lot of people like the one in the falls because of the tourists, not to mention the jobs that will be created the casino in the falls is not that bad of a thing imho and it helps keep tourism steady in that area in the winter months when its not so popular to go to the falls. Im also taking in to consideration with the “poker boom” it will bring people in from out of town solely for that purpose. I mean other than the sabres and the falls what brings people in to buffalo?? trips to canada but with the looming passport issue it is goin to hurt business and tourism here. I cant say i know how this will turn out but to me it seems more likely a casino will help the area over an outdoors store

So a downtown casino would be good because it would give the locals somewhere to gamble?

you are being very synical. the creation of jobs is big deal it will also increase local business in the area, people complain there are no jobs then as soon as people attmept to create jobs everyone gets pissed for one reason or another, of course there is going to be gambiling it is a casino. idk this is just my opinion, i clearly dont have the answer to save buffalo if i did id be a very rich man

don’t you have to have indian relatives to apply for a job at an indian owned casino or was that all just rumors?

no there are ads in the wny jobfinder

I am very skeptical of a downtown casino because of macro-economic theory and local precedence.

Yes, it will create jobs, but I believe that those jobs will be funded by local money. It will essentially circulate money within the economy. Every time you circulate money within an economy, it loses value. This is one reason why the casino will hurt Buffalo. That is, unless you truly believe that it will bring in tourists, in which case those jobs would be funded by outside money.

What business has developed as a result of the Seneca-Niagara casino? Maybe that casino has had a revitalizing effect, but I haven’t seen any evidence to that end.

If I believed that a downtown casino would take in more tourist money than local money then I would support it. I do not believe that that will happen. If the casino goes up, I really hope I’m wrong.

if they get that proposed market and other commercial land built at the same time it might actually do some good to bring life back into buffalo, bass pro alone wont do much though, there needs to be many new attractions at the same time to get the tourists there and to want to come back.

The agreement that will be signed Friday morning is called a “pre-development deal” between the developer, Bass Pro, and the Waterfront Commission

i missed that part when i 1st read it, a pre-dev deal means jack shit, sounds like something to get the public excited for it.

Thank God. They should take that 25 million to give tax breaks to new businesses that have something to offer the world outside of WNY.

Granted, the concept of bringing money into Buffalo by creating something to sell to the outside world is a pretty far fetched way to develop a struggling city. It’s so crazy it just might work though! :snky:

They are trying to find one thing to start building around…They are hoping it will be this but its self bass pro is nothing special but thats what their attempt is.

buffalo is trapped in a self perpetuating cycle. It has one major thing to build on an that is the waterfront but everytime someone tries to build it up people bitch and moan. wether it be a casino a bass pro or w.e it is goin to take much more than that to save the area. I have been thinking about some of the things willis mcgahee said an when u think about the things he says they attribute to the pitfalls of buffalo. If a person of his stature with no concern about money cant find any thing to do then for the blue collar people like most of buffalo is the choices are even less. We have the hsbc arena but other than sabres games the arena is rarely used for things such as concerts etc. stuff like that brings in all kinds of tourist money. I mean constantly i hear about my friends an tons of other ppl goin to rochester or syracuse for this or that instead of those people coming here for events. Idk maybe i am wrong in my perception of this

you’re not, as much as i didn’t want to i had to agree with mcgahee’s comments

 Buffalo is undergoing a transition from shipping and heavy industry to high tech manufacturing and knowledge work. Welcome to globalization. We have the schools to do it. It’s already happening. If the county and state would pull its head out of its ass and give tax breaks and other incentives to promote small high-tech business, it would happen faster. There is a lot of culture and reasons to come to Buffalo already in place, we just don’t have the funds to promote and expand them. Yet.

In the mean time those that don’t get it will spend their time bitching about how much Buffalo sucks and dancing around the issue by trying to revitalize the economy with pipe dreams.

On your HSBC comment…There is an event going on here just about every night.

events perhaps but events that are high on a noteriety scale that bring in people? im not disagreein with you i just am wonderin if you could elaborate on this statement

In the past month and a half…

Timberlake and Pink
Blueman Group
Sabres Games
Rodeo
NCAA Tournment
Bandits Games
Some national drill team championship thing.
There was some other big concert I forgot about.
Circus on Sunday

I know im missing some other shit…

Billy Joel & John Mayer next month…2 bandits games…nhl playoffs…

HSBC does not get concerts during the summer because of darien lake being outside.

Of the things you just said only the ones i highlighted really bring people in from other areas dont get me wrong im sure people go to those things but only two major concerts in the past however many months of all the artists on tour we could only get two. and with regards to the darien lake idea instead of letting darien lake gobble up all the concert we have a football stadium that is rarely used for anything other than football events. Just seems like the effort could be put in to get more things in those venues

You were comparing this to…

http://www.bluecrossarena.com/events.htm

no other arenas in general not solely the blue cross arena i didnt mean to give that impression

you guys cant really compare buffalo to other bigger cities though, it brings in a decent amount of concerts/whatever for the size city that it is.
