Security for PC

My Symantec is about to expire and its time to renew or get a new software. What is a good security software you can get online or buy at a store. Or should I just renew the symantec?

symantec is probably the best solution for a home user.

I’m not a fan of Symantec’s products. It’s missed a few nasties in my experience.

I recommend AVG Anti-virus and Windows Defender. Both are free and really don’t need much user intervention once setup.

I use Webroot Spysweeper with antivirus, and System Mechanic 7, i haven’t had a problem yet

i have the windows one i guess it works dont have any viruses

none of my machines use firewalls or AV…i hate resource hogging problems…a decent hardware firewall will keep you safe…just watch what porn sites you visit(seriously)

PM me i have your solution

so set up a HW firewall to block all ports, including 80, right? That’s the only way that a HW firewall will protect from viruses, but then you render the internet useless…

edit: the use of host based firewalls can be debated, the use, or lack thereof in your case, is not debateable. I guarantee that all of your machines are owned and you are not helping the botnet or spam problems.

chris, it’s not even worth your time to try to figure out where to start to explain things to him…

meh, I’m not overly busy, so I thought I would try…

my firebox > his best buy firewall

:kekegay:

Exactly…

and you say my posts make no sense? using HW firewalls and no AV is like sex with no condom…feels good but you gotta know when to pull out…sure accidents happen…you might get a virus(ur pc not you) but i recall a number of serious worms that came out where it didn’t even matter if you had firewalls or AV…remember…exploits get into the hands of the phreakers first…then the threat prevention companies, sorry i don’t believe in buying useless hardware from best lie. and my internet connection happens to run through a WRT54G with freeman on it and through a linux based server which is firewalled…please tell me how NONE of my 5 machines has gotten a virus in two years without running AV/FW software? maybe because i know what i’m doing and the rest of you artards don’t? most viruses that people get these days are through file sharing programs or website that they had no business being on in the first place. Common sense says don’t download programs from FS Programs if you don’t want to risk getting a virus…stop looking at porn when your wife is sleep & the kids are at school and you’ll be fine. Don’t knock what i do just because i was successful with it. Everything i use the net for functions completely fine…from browsing the net on any of my desktops/laptops or my psp and playing ps2 online…viruses don’t get in because of no protection…they get in because of human error and ignorance. i swear trying to conversate with some of you is like talking to an ape

i have cracked norton with over 3000days of subscription… shhhhh

xlogic:

you are a guy that’s good with troubleshooting computers, not a sys. admin at a major company or university. I have worked for the company that was very responsible for starting the internet, back when it was arpanet and they had uniac in the basement. I currently work for a place with an equally awesome reputation in computer science and threat detection. I’m not going to name either place, but you could probably figure it out by using “the google”.

while threats are changing from the standard virus that we grew up with (trojans, mass mailers), that is no reason to not run an AV program. Threats now are two fold, a vulerability in a program like IE, and then an exploit which deposits code onto your machine via the exploit. That is why I say, unless you block all ports, including 80, and not running any kind of AV or Spyware detector, your machine is probably owned and you don’t even notice it.

I hope you don’t check your bank account from any of your machines, someone has prbably xsite scripted your info. I hear ID theft is a bitch.

The only reason windows in on ANY of my machines is because the software i like to use(photoshop and others) is windows based. I don’t use internet explorer because of how screwed up it is with loop holes and exploits. I’m pretty sure there are people out there that know more than me…i don’t know it all i just know my shit. Programs like norton AV/FW have been known to be too graphically intensive for even some of the top end machines…yea sure there isn’t any reason to NOT use protection software but coming from a background of writing malicious programs to do “bad” things to peoples computers i know what to look out for and what to NOT do. Your average joe schmoe doesn’t know how to protect himself so he pays someone else to do it. I beleive money saved is money earned and do things myself.

P.S. I don’t use my bank account there is about 20 bucks in there just to keep it open for when i do actually need it…banks are stupid and horrible.
And a company very responsible for starting the internet…sounds really close to Al Gores bullshit line “I took the intiative in…creating the internet”

you’re such a dipshit.

and your mother should have used a coathanger instead of the day after pill which just ended up making you come out retarded

luckily my mother had dual firewalls

this is On-Topic… the point is that the kid wants an anti-virus program and got his answers… we don’t care about your elite skills and knowledge, becuase it’s easy so see right through.

just shut your mouth and learn from us ‘artards’.

kthxbye

blah blah blah. Wrayzor…last time i checked pc-Cillin was supposed to catch more viruses and threats than symantec/norton and it’s also less intensive as far as your system resources go…check out the reviews on pc-cillin vs norton and other products…you’ll see a big difference in the two
