the type of gear has nothing to do with engagement, Helical gears are in street cars because they are quieter no other reason, that wierd whirrrrr noise going in reverse is because the reverse gear is always a straight cut gear
Helical gears = Quieter= More load on the bearings in the tranny on high horsepower apps
Straight cut gears = louder = considerably less load on bearings in tranny
