Another One, Tranny Death

Leaving the Z meet a couple weeks ago, pulled hard though 1st and 2nd and BOOM!

Narly!

Gorgeous…

Wow those gears really got chewed. How much torque is the car making?

Eh that looks sweet bubba 8)

330hp
285tq

You even took out the draig plug! Nice one!

285 lb-ft?

Are you using really tired old previously seasoned trannies? That looks like it could have been countershaft play. If the CS bearing is toasty, it allows the shafts to move apart a bit, on hard gear changes you can lose the tip of the gears.

But Damn. Most of those are clean off!

the 71C can take more than that!

OSGiken time? Or maybe cryo internals? 1st off stop buying “used JDM” trannies

This is why i posted this… were going onto tranny #4 and its about time to stop wasting money and buy something or upgrade to something (eg 300ZX tranny) that can take the abuse!

Thanks for the info!

Adam

Slow learners?

Must be… We must be doing something wrong, Sasha’s running similar HP and from what i’ve heard he hasn’t hurt a tranny yet?!

Weak gears, almost all SRs will do that when you shift ‘right’

Hinson makes a Z32 adaptor kit, neh? Was a fairly decent price considering what you get…

or investigate mating the nissan truck tranny, fs5r30a… the internals are 95% the same as the z32 trans, of course finding the truck version and just swapping the right bellhousing+adapter is probably cheaper than getting a z32 unit outright

This has been confusing me for a while.

We see this happen a fair bit with JDM trannies coming over. Which really doesn’t make any sense. We’ve pulled trannies that look like that from behind stock SRs.

Marco is on tranny what … 15, 16?

Yet a lot of people are able to put big power through them no problem. There’s people putting twice that power through them, more torque too. I know guys that are shredding axle stubs they make so much power and get no tranny problems.

I think it might be something else. I’m wondering if it’s not the 2-piece driveshaft, or maybe the wrong driveshaft length altogether.

Bad tranny mount? Solid tranny mount but rubber engine mounts? Do you get a lot of chatter? Hmmm … do you run Redline or real oil?

You guys power shifting this thing at all? Im in the same neighbourhood in power and now youve got me worried.

we are running the srock two piece shaft, looking into one peice
running cusco solid engine mounts and peak solid tranny mount
but we are running an exedy twin plate clutch (on off switch)
the clutch sends a nice shock, personals i dont think these trannys can take that kind of shock, exspecialy 3rd gear. i found this
http://forums2.freshalloy.com/showthread.php?t=126960&highlight=exedy+twin+plate

look into southbend (sbc or dxd) clutches, the z31 crowd has the same problems with axle stubs snapping from shock, southbend can build a softer engagement clutch that can hold more power than act

the other thing is you can try a rebuild from eurodrive, same idea, get a softer (feramic/organic) clutch and much heavier pressure plate to make up for it

the harsh racing clutches really do cause hell

you can also investigate some way to slow the fluid release so the clutch doesn’t clamp all at once

Oh man that has me worried

I was really easy on my tranny for the first few races but lately ive been hammering gears trying to set new fast laps and now im going to stop haha

Did the tranny let go mid gear or on a shift?

Dude who dyno’d your car? I think its making more power than 285ft lbs because an .86 at 18psi that doesn’t quite equate.

That being said im gonna keep my .86 down around 16psi, and maybe i’ll bring my spare to the track! haha

ALSO, i heard rumors that S14 SR trannies are stronger than S13 SR trannies… im not sure if this is true, but it would be worth looking into

funny I read the opposite in a zoom or turbo mag, this guy had gone through 3 S14 tranny’s before switching to S13.

I see if I can find that article, maybe a scan it…

EDIT: ZOOM issue #48 GTautosound Zenki S14 W/270 Kw at the rear wheels…

EDIT X2: I also came accross an add for OS giken SR gearsets in an aussie mag…
