Just seeing if anyone has something for sale. I’m looking to spend around 3-5k which puts me in the 94-00 years for a boat. Looking for a open bow with trailer.
I need this out of my front lawn. uncovered it and had it running the other day. Besides a dead battery and cleaning the plugs it needed nothing to fire up. 1981 17’ Caprice and trailer. needs some tlc in the interior cosmetic department. As for functionality it works fine. dependable rig. comes with fish finder and depth finder with asking price. 90 hp mercury outboard. $1000 firm.
Looking for something a little bit better not a project .
Understandable, although the only thing stopping it from being water worthy is a reg. But at 1g for a boat and trailer cant expect too much lol right?
You looking for a 17-19’ new enough to be in decent shape and feel modern for 5 grand is like me trying to find a 24-26’ cuddy cruiser in decent condition for 15 grand. They do exist, but they are far between.
All boats are a project.

any opinions ?
A Bayliner Capri is the Chevy Cavalier of the boat world. If you take care of one they’re generally dependable transportation but the build quality isn’t going to be as good as say a SeaRay, Chaparral or Crownline.
Bayliner got a really bad rep in the late 80’s early 90’s when they were packaging their boats with Force outboards that were total garbage. Bayliner was the first boat manufacturer to start this “pre-packaged boat/motor/trailer” idea and did everything they could to cut cost, including creating the Force brand from some shitty old Chrysler outboards. Before that the dealer would get a Bayliner hull and would have to decide what motor to put on it, spend the time rigging that outboard onto it, then pick a trailer and set that up for the hull. Bayliner decided they could do that better and cheaper and started dropping off boat/motor/trailer combos that were turn key.
The Mercruiser package in this one is the same you’ll find in most other 17-18’ entry level I/O packages. You’re still dealing with Bayliner’s cost cutting measures on the hull though. Look carefully for transom stress cracks, spongy floors and failing vinyl on the seats. Sounds like this one was stored indoors/out of the water so it should be in pretty good shape. Of course everyone claims the boat they’re selling was kept that way.
Thanks jay for some insight help. I’m trying to go for a fishing / rec combo and this boat seems to have it. I also found this one because it also has a decent shine, interior looks ok and since the guy stated he’s willing to run in it without even asking makes it seem pretty legit. I know in my price range I’m not but a brand new bmw but just looking for reliability.
It looks like it was well cared for. Boats hold up so much better when they’re garage stored instead of left in the water. Reliability wise it’s a 3.0 135hp 4 cyl GM motor with a carb paired with a Mercruiser Alpha One outdrive. That’s probably the most common power package ever put in a boat and if has been taken care of should be as reliable as they come. Will it be fast? Not really. Probably low to mid 40’s. Enough power to pull a skier, wakeboarder or tuber without issue though. The skier will need to be on the lighter side if they expect to get up on just one ski though.
Sounds good! I’m giving him a call soon and hopefully going Tomm for a nice drive. If all works out and he takes a offer in the 3 range I’ll be joining the mini yacht club lol
