So I basically fell off the face of the earth the past year or so and have just now gotten back into getting the galaxie running…
But anyway the car was starting but immediately revving high. I figured I mine as well just rebuild the carb anyway since it has been sitting since '73 and it was leaking like hell.
But here’s a couple shots of it still on the motor…
After getting it removed I figured I’d take a picture of the intake which I’ve also been considering popping off and cleaning prior to putting the fresh carb back on.
But now into the actual tear down…
Prior to the tear down I sprayed the exterior of the carb with some carb cleaner along with soaking the carb in kerosine for a couple days (being sure that I removed any plastic parts)
I marked a few of the following pictures with some faint red circles to symbolize what I removed just as a future reference for myself and possibly anyone else that may be doing a tear down on a similar carb.
Under side of the top part of the carb…
I think I may have found the culprit why the engine was revving high…
Next I started in on the float
There is a clip that wraps around that I had to pop off prior to getting the float out so I was able to pop it off with a pair of needle nose pliers
With that out of the way I was able to then remove the floating needle
Next came the jets which were hell to get out. Fortunately I was able to get them out after letting them soak a bit in some lubricant
Onto the air distribution plate
Which then revealed a bearing and small metal rod.
Out came the venturi cluster
I popped out the red plug
After flipping the carb over, I removed these 4 screws
Needed a 1" wrench…
But that was the tear down process… Now I’m just waiting to grab some cleaner to get the parts soaking.
After cleaning the choke assembly a little bit it seems to shine a bit more than before.
But once I finish soaking the parts and let them dry, I’ll be sitting down with the rebuild kit and getting to work and try to take some more pictures although it’s just the reverse process… But I’ll be sure to post some pictures of the carb cleaned up.
