1994 Honda Civic CX problem, read on.

Manual transmission, stock d16. No modifications. 188,344 miles

Okay, I turn the car on this morning and the car is idling extremely rough, I take off and it continues to ride rough, blowing blue smoke out of the exhaust until I get to second gear going between 25-30 mph and the roughness and smoke stop. I get to my destination (work) come out 9 hours later and turn the car on, still idling rough. I take off and once again riding really rough and blowing blue smoke out of the exhaust, except when I get to about 25-30 mph. I get approximately 3-4 miles down the road and turn left, about 1/4 mile down the car overheats, I turn it off and let it glide into a parking lot. I open the hood and everything seems normal. I check the oil and it is fine with no milkyness to it or anything. I let it cool down for a few minutes and take off again, except this time, no rough idle or blue smoke. I get to a red light and here comes the rough idle and blue smoke again. I get about another 1/4 miles down the road and it overheats again, I turn it off and let it glide onto the side of the highway. I call a tow truck and voila I’m home but with many worries on my mind.

What is going on here? Is it the head gasket? Spark plugs and wires? What is it? I travel a lot for work and need to get this thing fixed like ASAP! Anyone have this problem with there Honda or other car? I don’t ever race this car nor do I abuse it in anyway. It’s just a daily driver that I actually take very good car of. This just came out of nowhere very unexpectedly.

If you have had this problem or know someone that had please let me know what it is.

I dont know about the overheating, but blue smoke and overheating could deffinatly be rings.

Ive seen the smoke on start up and first drive, normally the stem seals in the head take a shit, and oil leaks down atop the cylinders when the car is parked.
The overheating could be unrelated to the blue smoke or directly related to the blue smoke, does the cooling fan work?

did you check the coolant level?

sounds like a blown headgasket causing coolant to get into the cylinders and idle/run rough

I actually have not heard the cooling fan go on during this entire ordeal, The coolant level is ok I take it, since the overflow tank is about 3/4 full. Maybe I’m wrong but if the radiator which is new is running dry shouldn’t it pull from the overflow tank? Either way, I have a mechanic looking at it tomorrow and hopefully he can find out what it is.

except if it is a headgasket it can push water into the resevoir.

check your oil and coolant to see if youre mixing. if the coolant is muddy and the oil has a greenish tinge to it, your hg is cooked

I checked it and everything looks good. It might be a little low on oil but its been low before and It has been fine.

And the resevoir is full of water actually.

If you have some blue smoke like you say then you have some blow by some where, it could still be the HG even though there is no mikling. I would do a comp. test and see what numbers you pull. Check the plugs for oil, see if the fan actually does come on, that shouldnt have anything to do with the blue smoke though. Does it start hard? Does it stumble under acceleration?

Edit: reading OP again it sounds like you must have a HG leak somewhere, when you let it sit and then 9 hours latter it runs like shit its most likely slowly leaking in and building up, after you drive it and turn it off the oil is burned off, then you start getting coolant. check the comp. and get back to us, most likely a HG. If you need help I could do it cheaper then your mechanic, i would do it for 4100.

Damnit I wish I would have seen this sooner!!! The guy is going to work on it tomorrow. He will charge me like $200 or more for this shit!

He pulled the plugs out and the second one from the left was drenched in oil. He had me buy a head set and he is going to put everything new. I don’t know what it includes but it cost me $135.00 with tax, so it better be worth it.

BTW: I was at Advanced Auto Parts and this dude behind me told me that I need to replace every single head bolt bc apparently once you take them out the thread is fucked, is that truth?

once head bolts are taken out they are technically not supposed to be used again, as they stretch when they are tq’d down

imo with a sohc and no power mods you should be fine reusing them

You should replace them but I dont and never have. I have never had a problem with the coming loose or reblowing the head. You can always check the torque on the studs down the line after a few thousand miles. If you dont feel comfortable then do it but I have done a shit load and not once had a problem, knock on wood.

I don’t think it will be too late. The guy again did not show up today. Once you tell me you are ready to come over and work on it I will tell him to fuck off. First one to come through I will go with, I really need my car done because I am borrowing my uncles car and he is driving his “show” car around. And I feel weird. Either way.
