i like the tt v6 idea but too bad that 3.4l is just about worthless…
dont listen to the naysayers. do what you want.
what i dont understand is why a GN is ok with a turbo 3.8L and a camaro is not?
Brian
he doesn’t have a 3.8 he has a 3.4… doesn’t it? if he wants to simply go fast cheap a LT1 or LS1 is the answer. If he has a 3.8 he could probably spice it up with a GTP blower but ultimately a V8 will be cheaper.
The problem with a GTP blower on a Camaro 3.8 is that the intake snout would be pointed at the firewall, and he’d need to fab a u-bend just to get any sort of filter on the end (not to mention the throttle-body).
OTOH, Pontiac did have a couple turbo V6’s - one of which that might even be close to the 3.4 was in the McLaren Grand Prix, but that wasn’t worth much more than 205 hp to start with… the other was a 3g turbo Firebird, with a blown 4.3.
Oh, and as for the OP - if this car is to be a daily, I’d agree with the others: don’t mod it. Otherwise, feel free to do what you want, just don’t expect it to be easy or cheap (or even cost-effective vs. buying a LS1 car in the first place).
oh ok so the 3.8 didnt come out till the next year.
so what trans is in the car. do the 6 bangers get the same 4l60 as the v8’s? somehow i doubt it and i know the 5 speed is different and weaker.
so either way the car will need a trans to go with whatever engine goes in. any swap is going to be expensive. if youd rather do a 6-T then do it.
the only thing that i agree with is that a daily driver shouldnt be a hard core project car. i got away with doing stuff like that when i was in college cause i lived at school and had places to work on stuff.

GAWD!!! TT V6 cars are SOOOOO GAY!
best advice in the whole thread…
Unfortunatly there are a lot of smart asses on here along with some helpful people, but I’ll give you some experienced good advice.
Don’t mod it, just drive it. If and when you’re ready, buy a 98+ camaro with a V8 in it, get a manual transmission and go from there. Save your pennies and when you’re ready for the step up, do it. Don’t feel pressured by your friends that think just because it’s a camaro it’s fast. They obviously don’t know much about cars if they’re telling you to mod a V6 camaro. It will cost you more money to mod the V6 then it would to just buy the V8 car. If you have questions, let me know.
buy a miata

take it from 95mx6, swapping a dd on your day off and expecting it to drive it to work the next day is slightly naive.
Do whatever you like. i am Americanized euro trash so i will allways tell you that a turbo is your best option for everything from more power, to a toilet seat. with that said. Do not expect to tackle a project like this in a weekend with a buddy. The only way you will ever pull this off in a weekend is if you have done a swap like this in the past numerous times and know exactly what is involved, and have absolutely everything worked out. tuning a TT setup takes time. If you have a piggy backed ECU or even an after market stand alone system you can have a tune for the track, and than the street(that way u get your mpg’s), again. Tuning takes time.
Botom line. Know exactly what you want, and focus on that . Take your time, do it right, and be patient. Want to learn without messing up your daily? Buy a motor from the junk yard, rip it part, do some homework, check out the specs on it, figure out ow much stress the stock internals can take. if the HP ratings you want to achieve are out of the part’s reach, do some more homework and buy aftermarket replacements. Make friends…Just not on Nyspeed. there are only a handfull of people on here that have any usefull info. There is a kid that shows up to cruise night every week during the summer with a supercharged blazer. Its not a turbo but he can more than likely point you in the right direction as far as building a motor for your camaro. Even though he is probably running a 4.3.
DICK
But he sounds like a typical f bod owner.
You should probably just go with an Ebay kit.
I have 2 turbos for sale off my Z, no shaft play…i think they’re T25’s? :gotme: Not the biggest turbos in the world but they spool real fast. I doubt you plan on building your motor, and i don’t know how much boost that motor can handle stock, so i think they’d work for what you want to do with the car. Would probably let both go together for say…$650 or so.
In a Z i know these things can make around 375whp if you push them…but that’s just in a dinky 3.0L. I can probably throw in my side mount intercoolers too if you wanna try to make them work with your setup.
get one of the ones that runs off your electrical system
No.
hmmm i kinda like that ws6 , i am in the market for a ls1 too hmm
