my friends trying to put a new head unit in his car and was told he needs a chip or something because the radio controls other functions, is there anyway around this,

no… darylls car audio has those parts though
you will need a dash kit, harness and antenna adaptor. the trim panel that runs the length of the dash needs to come off for installation. its a pain
