2002 nissan sentra spec v valve job?

im buying a nissan sentra spec v in a couple of days from a friend who claims one of the valves are stuck…whats the worst it could possibly be and how much will that cost? The car runs and drives fine…it has 112k miles.

Thank you very much!

a valve being “stuck” followed by the statement “it runs and drives fine” does not compute. Have your friend take it to a mechanic or someone who knows what they’re talking about to take it for a drive and check stuff out.

how much are you payin for it is the question lol?

sorry i should of said it starts and drives…im paying $1000 for it

f—buy it…i could prolly take a lookksy after u get it and figure it our…i doubt the valve is stuck…what are teh symptoms

lol… I’d like to know how he diagnosed this “stuck valve”

does your friend even know what a valve is?

A quick google search indicates this is a cam-on-bucket motor… lol

could be anything…these cars have their issues that are easily worked out…but if u tell me the symptoms of this “stuck valve” LOL…i could help

2002? Did it have the precat recall done?

He owns a small dealership and bought the car from an auction like that and wants to get rid of it because he has no time. I seen the car yesterday its in pretty nice shape I didnt get to hear it run though because I was in a hurry. He said it is misfiring and has a stuck valve. I have no clue how he knows lol. I did some research and it shows that its a common problem for this car. The butterfly screws or precat screws come loose and get sucked into the engine. I dont think there was a recall was there? Anyways Gary should be taking a look at the car Monday with me, but thats all I know at the moment. Most likely its one of those issues though. Hopefully it didnt damage the cylinder walls.

I was thinking about just buying it either way because I could probably part the car out for more then $1000, or rebuild the engine and sell the car for 4-5k.

Do more research. There was a ceramic precat in the exhaust manifold that would get too hot and break apart, get sucked back into the engine, and trash the motor. It was a rather notorious recall. There was also a recall from oil gelling on this motor, though it was within the last couple of years. The QR25’s got a pretty bad rep, though those that own them and take care of them claim they’re pretty solid.

Given that this one has an unknown misfire I wouldn’t buy it unless you were cool with it being anything from a bad sensor to a bad motor. But hey for a grand, I’d go for it.

Wow. Does the damage only mess up the top end or is the whole engine toast? Doesn’t sound like a bad deal if just swapping heads can fix it.

Would someone pay $1000 for this if the motor ended up being bad? What do you guys think

I’d start off by pricing a replacement motor and decide from there. Check out some Sentra or Spec-v specific forums for a better opinion and factor in labor cost, unless you can do it yourself.

if the shell is clean yes. You could part it out and easily make your money back if you dont feel like finishing it.

1000 for this car even without a motor at all is an amazing deal, how can you possibly question anything on this car for 1000 bucks? Even if you have to put 2-3 grand into it, it’s still worth 6-7 grand in great shape at the end of the day…

I would buy it…even if the motors toast u can get a new running 1 with low miles for $1000-$1500 or scrap it easly for $1000 or more, also try thespecvboard.com and b15u.com both are awsome sites for the sentra with ALOT of usful info and people willing to help…i own an 06 spec v and would be more then glad to help u out just let me know!

Everyone has helped you out quite a bit already. I’d say it’s worth 1k, but plan on pricing and buying a new motor for it. Remember that motor can also be found in the Altimas equipped with a 2.5L.

As for the question someone had about the screws ruining the entire motor, there has been people that have had them pass through the motor with no problem at all, but others…not so much luck.

Like 06spec said, check out thespecvboard.com, b15u.com, b15sentra.net, myspec-v.com, and I’m pretty sure there are a few more. b15u.com being my favorite but doesn’t have all the information you might need. Sadly the community for this car is pretty seperated now after some recent drama on an absolutely awesome forum causing the owners to shut it down.

Any questions at all you have about the spec-v, just let me know…i’ve become pretty knowledgeable on the car, and am currently building mine for 450+hp.

thanks

5 grand tops

these motors are a dime a dozen in a junkyard…any 2.5 altima can be raped for motor

If it has a misfire and is a stock 02 Spec V, I would bet a screw got sucked into the intake manifold and banged the electrode closed on the spark plug. Pull the plugs and check em. If the plug is smashed the cylinder walls and head are probably beat and you will need a new engine.

If someone at this place is checking it out, ask them to pull the upper intake manifold and check the butterly valves for missing screws. Either way if there are screws missing or not, a compression check is needed for ANY Spec V that put over 15,000 - 20,000 miles on the precat.

As it has been said already, 1000 is a great deal for an 02 shell in good condition. If the engine is bad then you could always do a vq swap
