2003 Pontiac Sunfire Questions

Unfortunately my mother was recently in a wreck and her car was totaled. She is looking at a 2003 Sunfire with 65k and southern car, no rust, seems to be in good shape. The seller wants $4600.00.

Seems like a decent deal, I know the Ecotec’s are great engines. Anything I should look out for or check on. Are these cars known for any problems?

I would never let a family member buy a j-body after experiencing first hand how horrible they handle (crazy body roll). That’s my opinion though…

had a couple and never had a problem

Can get her an 02 cavy from a dealer with warranty with 75K miles for under $3k if interested

My girlfriend has a 03 sunfire with the ecotec motor.

The interior is absolute garbage, no room at all in that thing (hers is a coupe).

The motor is great, very reliable car.

As for problems, they had a lot of problems with the headlights in that thing. They put some pretty complex headlights in that car (dual bulb, plus fogs), instead of a 9007 or whatever headlamp. Fluid from the washer fluid tank would leak into the harness and short it out. There is a recall on the work, but the dealer that did the recall on her car did a total hack job, and the problem with dimming headlights came back. We had to rewire the entire headlight system from the switch all the way down… After it was wired right, and the leak in the washer fluid was corrected it has been no problem.

Also the rear drum brakes like to lock up, no matter what you replace on them. They squeek and sometimes grind. Its the third sunfire I have driven with the problem, so it isn’t an isolated issue.

Other than that they are cheap cars to buy. The insurance on the coupe is more than most economy cars because it has a bad crash rating.

We paid 4500 for hers with 39k miles on it.

I forgot to say the RESALE on J-bodys blow

seems expensive to me. Very reliable BASIC transportation.

Sorry my mom lives in Myrtle Beach

lol that might be a little far!

Any last complaints? She plans on picking up the car this afternoon

I think we covered the basics, shitty handling, crappy brakes, hideous cheap interior, over-priced with low resale but z0mg ec0t3c!!11

you must really hate your mother if u are about to let her buy a sunflower…and even more horrible is what she is willing to spend on one…i would hardly call the ecotec a great engine, it is an alright engine for its purpose but far from great

Paying way too much, besides that they are ok.

But thank you

buy a honda, she’ll never look back
honestly though, my mom used to drive only tauruss. she’d trade the old on in on a low mileage lease trade in every few years. bought a crv new a few years back. never been happier with a car
