Opens Saturday for the general public. Anyone going? I’ll be there bright and early.
I’m actually going for the first time. Either Saturday or Sunday. I’m pretty excited. I’m staying at the RenCen.

I went once, definitely something every car guy should experience at least once.
I heard it’s huge. Compared to the Buffalo one, how much bigger is it?

It is definitely very large. Went a couple years with some friends and it’s good to go at least once. If you are 19 or 20, stay in Windsor, Canada, just over the river.
Plan a full day if you want to see it all and not feel like you rushed. You can’t really compare it to the Buffalo show because the Buffalo show is nothing but a bunch of car dealerships under one roof. If you don’t like Volvo you cruise right by the Buffalo Volvo display. In Detroit you spend time at every display because there’s so much concept stuff you can’t see anywhere else. Wear really comfortable shoes.
The year I went the current style mustang shown there for the first time in 2004.

This. I always used to go to the NYC show, and so much of this was true. This show is likely bigger and better than that, so you’re definitely in for a time commitment.
You getting some Slows BBQ? Place will be packed maybe some takeout or eating at the bar.
I will probably go some time during the week; leave work early and go for the evening when it is empty.
Everyone seems to be staying here. Making the line at subway twice as long…
But it is better than the blind person convention that was here last summer.
LOL I’m past that age. I definitely had my fair share of drinks in Canada when I was 19 and 20 though. Boston Pizza, The Wild Mushroom, etc. Those were the days.
Yeah if I go on Saturday I would be getting there around 1 or 2 I think. We’re gonna be leaving Buffalo around 6 or 7 then we have to take the 90 (we don’t have passports haha). I think my buddy said it’s open til 10 though so I guess we’ll close the place. It’s good to hear that it’s so much more than just a big version of the Buffalo show. I’m pretty excited.
What concept unveilings/other cars are you guys looking forward to?

LOL yeah my buddy is a GM freak so he really wanted to stay there. I would have rather stayed somewhere cheaper but oh well.
So you work in the RenCen right? What should I check out while I’m there? I heard there’s some kind of GM exhibit?
They have “GM World”, I haven’t went down there this week, but typically they have current models, some future stuff (ex 2013 Malibu), and sometimes some classics. For the 100 anniversery there was amazing stuff, but typically it is nothing too crazy. The building tour will get you up to the 73rd floor or you can just go up there and grab a drink at the bar (the food is very expensive).
Potbelly’s is a good place for a grilled sub and has a nice place to sit and watch boats go by on the river.
Not sure what you are into but Belle Island has a Great Lakes Musem (nothing too exciting but it is free) plus you can drive around the “race track” for the grand prix next year.
I am looking forward to seeing the ATS, NSX and LF-LC. Plus a lot of other refreshes.
I haven’t sat in the new Malibu yet even though they have one downstairs.
I’ll have to check out the GM World display for sure. I think the Great Lakes Museum would actually be pretty cool. I had no idea it was on Belle Island, which I read about but I thought it was just a park. I didn’t know they were having a grand prix there either.
I’m there from Saturday afternoon until Monday afternoon so I’m thinking we’ll go to the auto show on Saturday then try to go to the Henry Ford and maybe the Walter P. Chrysler if we have time. Belle Isle looks cool and now I wanna go check out that museum and at some point I wanna check out Greektown. I think we’re gonna take the tour of the F-150 plant on Monday too. It’s gonna be a pretty jam-packed couple of days. Do you have any insight or advice on any of those things?
Greektown for the casino, food or just checking it out? Mexician town is also good for some authentic food. Slows is great for BBQ but it will be a 2:30 hr wait. Also the old train depot is over there. Head to Royal Oak if you want to hit some clubs at night.
Been here 5 years and still haven’t been to Henry Ford or Walter P. Chrysler.
Just walked down to GM world. Bunch of Camaro’s, ZR1 vette, CTS-V and a bunch of other current offerings. Hopefully they add some fun stuff this weekend as well.
Probably can get into Golden State at Detroit 6:00 PM on Sunday for real cheap.
Greektown for the food. I don’t really care about casinos because we have so many here now and I’ve been to Atlantic City. I don’t think I’ll be going to any clubs while there either.
Thanks for the heads up on GM World though, I’ll have to check it out. And thanks for the rest of the good info.
My wife and I are going to Detroit mainly for Slows and UE. Since this is going on while we are there I told her she needs to see it at least once.
We are getting in on friday morning and getting lunch there, if you’re interested text me.
Hmmm. Tempting. I will see how my day is looking Thursday, but probably not at this point. Thanks for the invite. A triple threat or pulled pork plate is calling my name. Plus don’t miss the mac.
Opens at 11, the closer to that the better. The train station is across the street if you are UEing, but I am sure you have that all mapped out.
Anyone staying for the Sabres vs Wings on Monday?
Slows was good, would have been a 2 hour wait at lunch on saturday but we got some seats at the bar. Show was great. Surprisingly. We stayed at the Inn on Ferry. What a great place to stay.
The show was ok, but way too crowded on Saturday when I went.
I stayed til Monday and went to The Henry Ford which I loved and also the F-150 plant at The Rouge which was ok but there was no production going on so I was disappointed.
Also drove around and saw some other stuff and had some amazing Polish food.

2 hrs sounds normal. A little better during the summer when the patio is open. 2 weeks ago we tried to go on a Thursday night at 7:30 and told a 1:45 wait. Until you have been there you don’t understand how crazy that is. Middle of no where DT Detroit with nothing around it and people are spilled on to the street waiting to get in. Now it is good, but not that good.
They said Saturday was the biggest opener in 5 years. I assume you went to Hamtramck area for Polish food? I been there a couple times, always good stuff.
One thing that Detroit offers is the “towns” for food (not just single resturants but a block or two); Greektown, Mexican town, Hamtramck (Polish), Dearborn.
Yeah I went to Hamtramck. A place called Polonia that I heard about because Anthony Bourdain went there. The food was great and I’ve had lots of Polish food in my day.
