Miata is said to be slightly smaller and about 220 pounds lighter than the current NC model, putting it closer to the original in terms of weight. We also think it will be turbocharged, at least as an option.
So, will this be better or worse than the FR-S / BR-Z?
Well they’re both light weight and RWD so I’m sure comparisons will be made. I’m wondering how it’s going to look with the insect-like design Mazda has been going.
I feel I must chime in here. Currently driving a 1990 Miata, previously had a turbo 1995 Miata. Family has owned (and Ive driven extensively) a 2002, 2004 and a 2012. Each car has things that make it really awesome, and some things that it lacks. One day I want to own one of each generation to enjoy what each has to offer.
Gennaro: <3 (sp?) lol IMO you really don’t notice the extra 300 lbs in the NB though. IF you do notice it, it can quickly be overlooked by the NB being a more comfortable driving car. The car is so much stiffer than the NA it makes it a much nicer handling car. If anything, buy the Mazdaspeed Miata and add an FM package.
The NC is really an awesome car. It does need a little more power but what car doesnt…especially Miatas. My dad’s 2012 Miata with intake and exhaust really is a blast to drive even if still a little underpowered. It gained weight and size but after driving it, it still feels small. Slap on some lowering springs and it makes it appear smaller, and look better. The NC certainly feels much quicker than my 1.6 NA. I can only imagine what the 2016 will feel like with the power (or more) of the NC and the weight of the NA.
Comparisons to the FRS/BRZ are inevitable and those cars are better in some ways than the Miata and worse than some ways. It also is difficult to compare a coupe to a convertible. Closer comparisons can come when they make a convertible FRS/BRZ whether it is soft or hard top.
