JDM Fairlady
2+2 Turbo
Car is only running on 5 cylinders right now. I have tested all my coil packs and even got a replacement for the cylinder I thought was not responding. Today i put in the new coil pack and nothing changed, then i took the rubber piece off that the spark plug goes into on the pack to make sure it was making contact with the plug. i put the pack back in to test and it ran all 6 cylinders for about 30 seconds then cut out and started back firing again. if its not the coil pack then what is it? the wiring seems to be fine. what is this ladys problem?
Probably a bad injector.
after testing it again, we found out that the spark on the cylinder closest to the headlight on the right, is totally iratic. I just put in new plugs, and we even switched the coil packs to make sure they were good. What else could be the problem? Could it be the transitor?
Wiring harness perhaps? A real ugly beast to track down if so.
My experience with a failed PTU is that the car just dies, runs great for a period and dies. There was no rough idle, sputter or misfire…just DED.
Good luck man…
I agree. Harness^^^^^^^ easy way to find out is when it is running good just wiggle the harness to see if you looks the spark. Anytime I diagnose a problem I always start with a quick check over everything to make sure intercooler pipe is good. The is problem procists I will start the car and unplug one coil pack at a time. If you unplug one and you dont hear any change then thats the cyl you have the problem in. Normally a bad coil pack as nissans dont normally foul plugs. I then swap in a new coil pack. If it doesnt work I will throw a new plug in. If that doesnt work 9 times out of 10 there is a brake in your wire and that coilpack is stuck in open loop. Ive done this 3 times this week. Takes 10 min’s. Fixes the problem 9 times out of 10. The other chance is that you have a bad injector but that doesnt normally hampen. Well not as common.
Yeah, check grounds, and check the ignitor chip.
Today i checked all of the wires and ran the car while doing it and found nothing. where do i find the igniter chip?
Not sure what an “ignitor chip” is but we have an ignition module or PTU. Where abouts are you, if you are not too far from me I could always swing by and let you use mine to test, they run just shy of $300 to buy one and its not returnable if you dont need it.
Yeah PTU/ignitor chip same thing. its the little black and silver looking box on the front passenger side timing belt cover. That is if someone has not relocated it. Chances are if its still on the timing belt cover its the original that was recalled and is know for failing. If you dont find it there it seems the most likely place that people relocate to is under the nose panel, thats where my new one sits now.

“300zxgal” from 780…?
Have you checked your CAS (Crank Angle Sensor), or its harness connection?
PS - we have a Z Club meeting at Sherwood Nissan tonight, in case you wanted to drop by. (starts at 7:30pm).
PPS - time to get onto the tech forum at www.twinturbo.net again, if you haven’t already.
hey yea my ptu is still on the timing belt cover . what should i check on my cas?the postion ? i checked the harness plug , seems fine ? im in nw calgary . we should meet up and test it out. im not 300zx gal from 780 ahaha. my car is at nissan right now so i wouldnt be able to bring it to the meet i might ride my bike . where are you located Dconz?
 Sorry, I just assumed, as she’s been posting lately on 780 about “similar” issues with her car.
PS - Brasso is probably the best dealership in Calgary to take a Z32 to. (they are Calgary’s equivalent of our Ericksen Nissan, in terms of Z32 experience and technician excellence, at least from what I’ve heard from Calgary folk).
alright thanks man
