76 280z restomod project

Looks good so far! Keep us updated

Finished removing the old leaky tank yesterday along with evap tank and the old fuel and brake lines. Now all that’s left is to order some socketless hose fittings to screw on to the -6 an feed and return I have welded on to the new tank. Also gonna need to clean and coat the new tank. Anybody have any experience with some of the kits available online that could recommend me one?

Also took a quick look at my floors to determine my course of action in dealing with the rust issues that are plaguing the floor supports.

As you can see from the pic, the floors are rotted through all around the floor support up to where the drivers and passengers feet would be, but nowhere else. So, should I bother purchasing new weld in floor pans or just cut out the rusted section and weld in appropriately shaped sheetmetal along with new floor supports?

I might have missed it while reading the thread…but did you say what you plan on doing for a turbo? Or is this pretty much a stock resto build?

And insanely clean shell from the pics…nice bay progress!

Plans are to get the motor running properly stock and after that install megasquirt. Once I have something I can tune with I’ll begin upgrading various things.

Didn’t really do much until last week. Ended up replacing all the hard brake lines after they kept getting stuck in the flex lines and proportioning valve which resulted in me just stripping all the fittings and buying stainless steel flex lines. This also let my route them slightly differently in the rear since I really hated the way Nissan routed them right up against the chassis and the swaybar. Also managed to finally seal the inside of my new fuel tank after welding on -6AN fittings for the feed and return. Also ordered some zg flares so I have an excuse to cut out the rust in my rear fenders.

Unfortunately my wiring portion of the swap hasn’t been going too well. I pretty much wired up everything according to the schematic I got off HybridZ but I can’t can’t get my starter to crank off the ignition and I keep burning a ground when the key is set to on. I can get the starter to crank the motor when I connect the starter wire to the positive battery terminal so the starter isn’t whats bad.

Going to take a look today at the wiring diagrams for the car as well as the one for the 280zx turbo which I got the motor from. On a positive note I finally managed to get compression readings for my cylinders which all turned out to be between 130-140 psi so I’m glad that at least the motor is in good shape.

Nice progress. I’d love to do one of these someday myself, MPD’s and coldaccord’s were always tempting but no space yet. Should be a clean head-turner when she’s running.

Very nice! Looking forward to the finished product!

awesome resto…always like the body styles on these

Made a little bit of progress. Wiring is completely finished. Was having a no spark issue which turned out to be a bad coil and igniter. Finished replacing those today and now i will randomly have spark/fuel while sometimes there will be no spark/fuel when cranking the engine. Didn’t get a chance to get the car running yet since my battery got drained but I’m gonna give it a shot later tonight.

Also ended up installing the zg flares in the front and rear. Fronts were pretty easy but the rears took some time since I had to tack together the inner and outer portion of the fender to make a new lip. Gonna post up some pics of that later.

WOOT, after a few tries the car finally started up. Now all thats left is to set the timing and go for a little spin. Gonna try to get a video up in a bit.

pics?
