Tj i know how you feel. There a motor that if taken care of can run along time but if prior owners havent taken care of them they dont last and they dont give you any signs upon letting go. Have you checked out NEONS.org yet if you plan on building a motor i recomended signing up to the site, there is tons of info especially on dohc builds and different options so you can see what route to go with based on other peoples experiences so it saves you the money of doing the experimenting. Theres a forsale section that has tons of deals on there because alot of the people buy really nice parts and realize there in over your head and wind up selling their parts for much less. Do some research before deciding with the build set up, because you can still build a motor that can put you in the 13s low 14s and keep it streetable but 12s will turn a neon unstreetable and face alot of driveability issue especially since were both OB2 vehicles so were under the mercy of dmv inspections. If you have any questions or need help id be more then happy to give you a hand.
thanks man… i think i’m gonna do a basic N/A build on another DOHC motor. gonna buy a 420A block and build on it. rebuild my head with some fidanza cam gears and crane cams more than likely. decent clutch and hammer it. gonna start pulling the motor in like 2 weeks to see what exactly happened so if you’re interested in ripping apart and drinkin some beer lemme know
well the sohc and dohc blocks are very similar other then top ends. i had a dohc stroker motor with a sohc head awhile back which put me at 12.98 at 106 with 125 shot but i started getting greedy with spray and it didnt last due to the extreme cylinder pressure. i would strongly stay away from findanza cam gears. just hearing the name makes me :headbang. i had one on the sohc motor. and there cnc cut design actually starts to get tiny hair line cracks in the design and are almost unnoticeable which let go on me on the way home from the track a year ago. There bolts on the cam gears also strip out and can move slightly which might cause some problems also. the AEM cam gears are realy nice and there design is so much more thought out. you can usually find a set on the for sale section fairly cheap.
I wonder if the instrument cluster was swapped at one time.
They go bad alot and people just put a junkyard one in.
My '96 showed 68k on the odometer but 80k on the title. Considering what I traded for it I didnt really care.
Maybe thats why the motor went at 70k.
All cars have problems and what not . i had bought my car with 62XXX on it and had spray on a stock internaled block with just head work and very minimal mods and i had ran a most of a time a 50 shot sometimes a 75 shot and i went through prob 15-18 20lb tanks of spray and she didnt shit the bed. i melted a upstream o2 sensor every now and then but it never mad any noises other then the high mileage lifter tick due to there shit one piece designed rocker lifter set up. The research and having morgan tune it really makes a difference because i have put over 40, 000 miles on the car with driving it daily and spraying it at least once or twice a week .i took the motor out with 108,xcf miles on it and it still ran. I hear alot of people that try spray and it doesnt work out so well for them, but it really is all in the tune and doing research before you spray the miles away :runaway
i just want a basic NA tune and basic NA build i have a 5 year old and want a car that can go and pick up the kid from soccer and school. they arent the coolest car but to find one tastefully modded is really hard to find.
