im gettin into a 98 gti vr6 for a summer project… does anyone know where or how much a turbo is for the v6?
More than it is worth on a FWD car.
Ok, I’ll stop saying logical things for a moment:
Back to reality.
Just do the usual VR6 mods: Intake, chip, and exhaust. It will be a fun to drive great sounding car. You aren’t going to be killing F-bods or anything, but it will be good on the back roads.

lol.
its not a true v6, only one head… and like jj said, its really not worth the hastle. you should probably be worrying about timing chains and piston rings on a 9 year old vr6 before b00st.
check out www.vwvortex.com. use the search, best of luck.
I agree with JJ, also include cam’s in those mods and when your doing the cams take Jam’s advice and do the timing Chain.
Past that thare is a guy on Ebay selling an inexpensive kit I have heard people using (well inexpensive for a vr $3500) but as you will find VR’s get expensive fast. (I’v owned 5 VR Cars I love them, but it was cheaper to buy the EVO then boost the VR properly and Reliably)
The first question you have to answer is do you want performance results or just a fun car?
If you want performance results then don’t bother N/A modding a VR6. The heads just don’t flow that well. Intake, cam, chip, and exhaust will run you at least $1200 and you’ll have a whopping 15-20 whp gain to show for it. Anything beyond 200whp is going to require FI or extensive and expensive modifications such as stroker kits. The problem is that VR’s are the anti-Honda. Their head just doesn’t flow well.
If you really are willing to go turbo, there’s a decent basic kit out there for $3k. A guy on here named Jaegermeister posted it a while ago. He probably knows more about this motor than anyone else in WNY, as evidenced by his gorgeous turbo Corrado. Lemme see if I can find the link…
I can’t find the post, but I think this may have been the kit:
http://www.kineticmotorsport.com/products/Kinetic_Motorsport_Stage1_MKII_III_VR6_Turbo_Kit_ODB2_96_99_5-159-136.html
Granted, there’s no intercooler so you’d have to stay pretty conservative with boost levels but it might be a quicker/easier way to crack the 200whp barrier…
That sucks. Going turbo to “crack the 200whp barrier” on a 2.8L motor.
IIRC, Kinetic does offer a IC, it just doesnt come with the Stg. 1 kit. In the realm of VR turbo kits theirs is probably one of the more reliable.
Yes, I know i just used turbo, VR, and reliable in the same sentence.
Eh, turbo/VR/reliable actually go together pretty well. It’s a strong motor. You just can’t add “cheap” to the formula.
“Cheap” is usually the downfall to any equation.
