A/C's: what will cost a lot to run?

I want to get an a/c for my apartment. probably just for my bedroom. what size (btu) and wattage should I be looking for?

my friend has an 18,000 BTU energy star GE unit that he claims is not expensive to run. he said 1100 watts. I don’t know, but I can’t believe it would be inexpensive. I was figuring more like 6000 btu would be right for me

that is from the NYS energy star page. Good tips and how to size it.

About 10 cents an hour for 6k model.

size of the room?

ok, no matter wtf the cost is, it is worth it. people that get hung up on well my electric bill is going to sky rocket from this etc.

I bought a shitty non energy star window A/C unit. I run it pretty much all day except when I am at work, my electric bill went up like 6-10 dollars.

i have a 5,500 btu LG a/c. I have it on all night when im sleeping and hardly ever during the day. My electric bill went 5 dollars.

I have two 5,000 btu’s for $90 for both. Let me know. I need to get rid of these.

energy usage depends a lot on air leakage, type of insulation/windows, etc.

if it’s just for a bedroom, close your blinds during the day and keep the door shut and you shouldnt be paying too much at all.

That’s way too big for a bedroom. AC BTUs are not like HP… you really can have too much. You want an A/C to run a lot because it’s taking moisture out of the air when it’s running. If you go to big all it will do is cool, then turn off, leaving the air moist. Cold moist air is not comfortable at all.

As for cost, a new 6000 won’t add much to your bill at all. Turn it on 30 minutes before you go to bed and it will have your bedroom down to freezing no problem.

Most places have great sales on them right now too since retail considers July the start of fall merchandise. I bet you could find brand new 6000’s at home depot, lowes or target for around $100.

The little ones are so efficient I still keep ours from our apartment days even though our house has central air. We rarely run the central air, and when we do we only cool the house to 76 or 77, just enough that it’s comfortable with a fan. Then we run the little window one in the bedroom because I like it cold when I sleep.

I run like 2-3 ac units alot, my bill went up maybe $10. Just keep em on when yer home or get a digital one that has timers/energy saving features, theyre worth it, last night i was freezing!!
