Defending one extreme with another.

You’re comparing the slight stretch of a high quality racing tire that is designed for such an application with the severe stretching of mostly crappy street tires with weaker beads. I see the relation, I do. :stuck_out_tongue:

so please prove how dangerous they are…

educate me.

No, that would be called “Using examples to support your viewpoint”.
Slicks are designed to be run in a stretched configuration? News to me, here is the exact same tire size as on that M3 on a 997…

No stretch there!

Basically you don’t have a clue as to what you are talking about and just blindly hate stretch because of what it’s come to represent in the “modified” car world. But hey  to being a bigot of the automotive world.

There are plenty of examples on VW, BMW, and Honda forums with cracked beads due to this fad. I’m not going to spoon feed you.

Again, you’re saying what is good for race tires are good for street rubber. :connection: I’m curious, for performance reasons, would you run 195s or 205s on your 350Z? My Integra’s stock size is 195 but I’ve mostly been using 205 or 215s…silly me. I’ll step down to 165s for my next set.

No hate here. Only people I hate in the automotive world are car thieves.
Bigot? Do you always throw that word around lightly? haha Sure if you want to believe that…I’m a regular Archie Bunker.:frowning:

Don’t get so worked up, buddy. It’s just the interwebz.

Ok, here’s my contribution to the “dumped” thread.

Show me one. An event I help organize had over 1000 cars show up last year, I’d venture 80% of them had stretched tires. I didn’t see a single cracked bead, or hear about any from the various people in the area that I associate with. The only failure I know of was from a BBS wheel that failed due to a chunk of concrete being ripped up from a dump truck.

Appropriate tires for the appropriate situation, I vary 40+mm in tire size on the Z for different events, for the appropriate situation, going from a slight bulge to a slight stretch.

Back peddle much?

Perhaps you should educate yourself, on tire use, design and English vocabulary. Bigot ≠ racist.

HAHAHAHA, I’m sitting here laughing, having a beer, enjoying the entertainment of someone who clearly doesn’t know what they are talking about.

And just to keep it on topic.

I have researched this pretty well and most of the threads I have seen have no proven situations where stretching tires was unsafe… however I’m sure there is a point where it becomes dangerous…

“tire-to-rim sizes are determined based on many tests, not just on width. Stretching a tire takes away some, if not most of the load dampening characteristics of the tire, which is what gives the rough ride. also, there is some concern about the sidewall being put into a linear-type loading as opposed to bending, i.e. being subjected to a force instead of a bending moment, but that research has yet to be done. rubber is hard to research, it’s hyperelastic, yet the composite structure of a tire changes it’s properties completely.”

now in drifitng stretched tires are used to lessen the severity of the tire sidewall preventing from the tire catching and gripping in a high speed drift. Companies like Toyo and Falken engineer thier tires for this purpose. And last time I checked drifting is an SCCA event which means OMG it’s racing on stretched tires. i just find it very interesting how these guys can go drifting and spinning tires at speeds up to and exceeding 100mph on the track and have no issues with beads slipping and all that jazz.

with that being said…

You still cannot separate the difference between severely stretched street tires done for appearance rather than the slightly stretched race tires you keep referencing for performance. Do you believe these severely stretched tires are more susceptible to failure caused by potholes, road ripples, and chunked concrete than a normal range of tire size for a particular wheel/car? My original comment was directed at street tires on street cars.

But for the Z, do you actually use such a small size? Most people with a 40mm range go from maybe one size below stock to several sizes north.

Believing someone’s judgment is retarded does not constitute hate. You must have never experienced real hate. You’re a lucky person.

Who said anything about racism? I don’t believe Archie had violent thoughts towards people…but honestly I haven’t seen many episodes.

I must admit, the math and science side of my brain has always been stronger. I never did fully grasp the Queen’s English. :frowning:

I’m your entertainment? Wow, Vikings game is doing it for me over here. :stuck_out_tongue: Go Vikings!!

RSR

More dumped…

Yes, I’m sure there is a point where it becomes dangerous. I never said every slightly stretched tire is a time-bomb. My original comment was directed towards the severely stretched…even though I didn’t spell it out for some people.

Yes, this stretching thing is relatively new so I’m sure there isn’t much in empirical testing done on wildly stretched vs normal.

Drifters are hardly concerned about the longevity of their tires. Also, I would assume, but may be wrong, that most drifting venues have relatively smooth surfaces free of potholes and chunks?

Another…

I see those wheels on so many high end cars, what are they?

On the F40?
