Also a broadcast with Penn talking about the game.
Apparently a that was being made but never got released Penn & Teller’s Smoke and Mirrors for SegaCD had this mini-game in it called “Desert Bus” which simulated a desert trip from Tucson to Las Vegas in a bus with a top-speed of 45MPH done in real-time. Supposedly takes a bit over 8+ hours to complete if not more.
Apparently this game was meant to be a contest that people could play in to see who could get there fastest.
Other items of realism/masochism include:
-No pause so it would have to be played straight through. (Most emulators lack the ability to save SegaCD games)
-The bus pulls to the right constantly, so you have to be at the remote as it randomly varies
-If you stop the bus will overheat, no resting (To the best of my knowledge)
-If you let go of the remote and stop in the sand off to the side you get stuck, and then blow your engine.
-If you exceed 45MPH it will overheat
-No music because life has no soundtrack
-Pine-tree air freshener
-Waiting several minutes for the tow-truck to take you back to the start.
-And who knows what exciting desert like things you’ll encounter like… uhh… well… sand, and occasional cacti.
And thanks to the internet, this interesting (read: Nightmarish) game is now available to the world via BitTorrent. Cringe in fear everyone. If anything I might find an emulator that does support save states, and try to beat it.
Only if the most exciting thing I can find is gouging my eyes out with a fork.
