Use Pidgin instead? 
the aim software is gross, and plus it forces you to use AIM. Whenever I think AIM I have horrible memories of āa/s/lā IMs from random people back in the day.
Pidgin supports aim but also google talk, msn, yahoo, jabber, whatever
