Accomplished balloon pilot takes 5 skydivers up in his balloon. Advised divers to bail at 5000ft because of incoming storm system. divers land safely. balloonist ends up in the storm at 18,000ft and converses with his ground crew all the while, including after his balloon is destroyed and he falls to his death.
Atlanta (CNN) â A search-and-rescue team on Monday found the body of a missing hot air balloonist who had crashed in Georgia three days earlier.
Acting on a tip from a witness who saw an object falling Friday, authorities dispatched a helicopter in the direction she described and quickly found the body of Ed Ristaino of North Carolina, according to Ben Hill County Sheriff Bobby McLemore.
âWe were relieved that we found him,â McLemore said. âBut that still leaves recovery.â
Teams made up of state patrol officers, forestry units, neighboring sheriffâs department personnel and volunteers scoured areas east of Fitzgerald in south-central Georgia, where the balloon basket went down.
At least seven helicopters and planes and more than 100 people on the ground participated in the difficult search, McLemore said.
Ristaino had taken five skydivers up in his hot air balloon around 6:45 p.m. Friday when he noticed the wind picking up and realized he was driving the balloon toward a large incoming storm system, McLemore said.
âThe storm was pulling the balloon closer towards it, so he asked the skydivers to bail out. He had them jump from about 5,000 feet.â
While the five skydivers landed safely and were picked up, Ristaino and the balloon continued heading southeast and rose another 2,000 feet, McLemore said.
âHe went up into the clouds and had radio contact with his ground crew and told them it was hailing on him, there was lightning and rain and heavy wind,â he said.
An updraft carried Ristaino up to about 17,000 or 18,000 feet above ground before a downdraft collapsed the balloon and sent him plummeting.
Ristaino stayed calm and talked to his ground crew on the radio the entire time he was falling.
âIâm in trouble. Iâm falling. I donât have anything above my head,â McLemore recalled from accounts told to him.
The balloonist said he was falling at 2,000 feet per minute, but an altimeter reading says he may have been falling as quickly as 60 to 90 mph, McLemore said.
âAs he was falling, he did a countdown. He couldnât see anything because he was in the clouds. But when he broke through the clouds, he said, âI see trees,â and thatâs the last thing they heard.â
A friend of Ristainoâs called him an âaccomplished balloon pilotâ who had logged âmany hours of safe balloon operation.â
âHe was very much a gentleman and it doesnât surprise me at all that he managed the situation and had his skydiver passengers get out of the balloon for their own safety,â said Bob Tettman, a fellow balloon pilot.
^wow. Crazy story. Truly all that is man.
They shoulda Mr. Billâd that dude.
I would have asked if I could have duct taped myself to one of the skydivers⌠Balls of steel.
Sad story. Reminds me of that 1,000 ways to die book I read in elementary school.
A friend out of state posted this up on a forum. ATIM worthyâŚ
"A friend of Mozelleâs is a combat medic stationed in Kandahar (sp?), Afghanistan. Jordan is 21 years old. He was supporting his unit as they were doing a road clearing operation at night - basically using C4 to blow up IEDs that were planted on/in the roadway. The operation went long and by dawn, they were experiencing small arms fire, which was quickly discouraged. Then the mortars came in. One blew up eight feet in front of Jordan. He was knocked unconscious immediately, has a concussion and both ear drums were burst. He came too in 2-3 minutes and went to work on the Platoon Sargeant. That guy was closest to the mortar and had burns over 45% of his body, inhalation burns, both legs were broken due to shrapnel and the explosion concussion, an eye socket was destroyed and a bruised heart. He was medivaced out within 8 minutes of the explosion with Jordan working on him the entire time. The Sargeant is expected to live and wonât be minus any body parts, except for a lot of skin. Jordan has been awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, although as mostly happens with people who are awarded that honor, he says that he was just doing his job and doesnât deserve it.
Jordan is currently at Headquarters being treated for the concussion and seeing what theyâre going to do about his hearing. Heâs lost complete hearing on the left side and has vastly diminished hearing on the right, although some hearing may come back once the healing has happened. Heâs been offered a trip home, but so far is refusing it. He wants to go back to his unit, but he may need surgery on the ears before that could be a reality. They might let him stay at Headquarters as a field medic helping to do triage for their medical unit. Jordan want to be a doctor and thatâs why he joined the military and the medical corps.
Heâs a great guy and regardless if I believe that that war is just or not, I 100% support the troops that are there. Mozelle and I are making up another care package to send him of dryer sheets, jerky, pistachios, wet wipes and whatever else we can think of to put in the box. Why dryer sheets? The guys put them in their boots and clothes to help with the smell. The wet wipes is because there are 2 showers for 120+ peopleâŚ"
