In NYS all that right gets you is that you are not obligated to run away if possible. I.E. If you use a deadly weapon and he didn’t have a deadly weapon, you lose. Normally you are obligated to flee if possible and you may only respond with deadly force if fleeing is not possible and the bad guy is also using deadly force. If you are at your home you don’t have to flee.

mostly correct give or take, you’re first step is to escape or evade, and you’re only allowed to use deadly force if you or anyone you’re directly responsible for (wife/child/ect) is in danger of loss of life. so you’re screwed no matter what essentially. if they’re in your house, and are going to harm you, you have to try to leave. if you’re chasing after them, you are 100% at fault and will do time.
Not to mention even if you weren’t charge, or won a criminal trial…you are certainly going to be losing the civil case.

the incident by the use or threatened imminent use of unlawful physical

(c) The physical force involved is the product of a combat by
agreement not specifically authorized by law.
2. A person may not use deadly physical force upon another person
under circumstances specified in subdivision one unless:
(a) The actor reasonably believes that such other person is using or
about to use deadly physical force. Even in such case, however, the
actor may not use deadly physical force if he or she knows that with
complete personal safety, to oneself and others he or she may avoid the
necessity of so doing by retreating; except that the actor is under no
duty to retreat if he or she is:
(i) in his or her dwelling and not the initial aggressor; or
(ii) a police officer or peace officer or a person assisting a police
officer or a peace officer at the latter’s direction, acting pursuant to
section 35.30; or
(b) He or she reasonably believes that such other person is committing
or attempting to commit a kidnapping, forcible rape, forcible criminal
sexual act or robbery; or
(c) He or she reasonably believes that such other person is committing
or attempting to commit a burglary, and the circumstances are such that
the use of deadly physical force is authorized by subdivision three of
section 35.20.
There is nothing about it needing to be someone in your family/direct care. If I look out in my front yard and some guy has a complete stranger pinned down holding a knife to them, that’s justifiable deadly force. It’s a reasonable fear for the immediate death of yourself or another. To be safe you better yell for him to put the knife down before shooting though.
Some rican punching your sister in the face, not so much. You have the right to use force but not deadly force. Maybe if he’s on top of her and it looks like he’s going to punch her head in but if they’re just standing toe to toe going at it like white trash vs tan trash that’s going to be a tough sell to the police.
