Another building a computer thread... come beat a dead horse...

AHH… it’s time for another… “Build that computer” … Im your host Ninja Matt welcome to the game.

Everyone should know how to pay so lets set the rules…

1.) Matt wants a computer
2.) Matt has money… but would like to keep it around 1000$
3.) Matt has picked out a couple option already but need opinions from those who have been doing this alot longer…
4.) Matt really wants the GeForce 8800GTX

That’s about it… anything else is fair game… this is what I have so far

I like asus, it’s what I run now… I hear good things… So i went with this board… PCIe, still skeptical on the advantages of SLI… but it also has support for the chip i wanted which has a good FSB speed and nice L2 cache…

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115004 or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115005 <-- cheaper ( Not sure if the extra CPU speed if worth the money )

I have a hard drive… may pick up another and figure out some Raid Array, or SATA or whatever you call that parallel hard drive crap. Never did it… but im sure its not rocket science.

I get so lost looking at all the crap on newegg… I don’t really care about overclocking, unless it’s easily done… as in… done through the BIOS… I don’t want to solder onto my 200$ mobo… which is what I remember OC’ers doing when I was in high school… im sure times have changed since the turn of the 20th century tho.

I don’t do anything too demanding… except play World of Warcraft entirely too much… and I would like to play with zero lag, on the highest settings and highest resolution ( because i can )… possibly while running shit in the background and listening to a music selection on winamp or something.

So those are my criteria… I want the GeForce 8800GTX because my girlfriend will say, “Wow, that much on a graphics card… you are fucking stupid.” … but what I will hear is… “Wow, GeForce 8800GTX … do me in the butt while you get your T3 set in world of warcraft.” …

I just mainly want to make sure this system last at least 4-5 years… so Im willing to drop some money. Thoughts? Comments on my current selections? Ideas? Experiences? … anything will help me out… thanks!!

lol

who is this?

who are you?

where did you come from?

we should start calling you andy

if you want it to be around for a while, I’d honestly wait for DX10/hardware to come out and then drop some coin on a nice DX10 card. Don’t get me wrong, that card will be a badass, but it’s gonna suck when all the new shaders and other technology come out and you just spent a ton of $$$ of an outdated vid card

Last 4-5 years… I dunno.

Spend $1200-1300, and you’ll pretty much have what you are looking for. Top tier duo core/AMD equivelant, pimp video card.

Check out the GTR2 thread, I think neurokinetik posted his setup he just built, ~$1300. I’ll post mine up once I actually order the parts.

Roger that… Ill take a look at the Bret’s setup…

Isn’t the DX10 the ATI’s answer to the 8800? What is different about that shaders… I thought the 8800GTX has that shit on lockdown.

Besides… I keep waiting for the coolest shit to come out… I never get it… because… cooler shit keep coming out in 2 months… so then I get stuck with a 32MB card and 800MHz processor while I always wait for the newest shit… starting to make me angry.

Yeah I agree, just buy whatever video card you can afford now, because every other month somebody one ups the latest greatest.

When I was budgeting my system, (~$1200), I put video card and cpu first. Get the biggest baddest video card you can afford (up to 50% of total budget). Then get the best mobo/CPU combo, then fill out the system with whatever money is left. You should be able to do pretty well with that philosophy.

lol I meant DirectX10 but nevermind anyway, I thought the 8800 was a directx 9 card… didnt know it supported v10. I’d say go with it… fully supports shader model 4.0

shaders are just special effects applied to 3d surfaces and such that the video card is capible of producing. HDR lighting, dynamic tone mapping, normal mapping, bump mapping, ect is all controlled using them

Thats what I was figuring on rick… hence my 8800GTX selection… Im not too worried about something better coming out in the next couple years… cause I’m sure that thing will rock mad socks for some time.

lol… DX10… got ya… yea… I think this thing has all the bases covered for some time to come… at least thats the impression im getting.

i’m putting a new rig together too… somehow i’m up to 3,300 :frowning:

Ok starting to make some decisions here… going with so far…

http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820145034

hmmm… somehow im up to 781$ … and I haven’t gotten the 8800GTX yet… DOH!!!

Im thinking I could chince on the MoBo a bit maybe?

1441$ with the 8800… that doesn’t leave any room for fun stuff… like monitor and sound card and speakers.

I should really get a monitor that takes advantage of the DVI tho yes? ><

SATA, SATA, SATA DO IT, completely worht it in every fashion.

also you sure you wanna drop $300 on that memory?

i might have an e6300 and intel board to sell…

not if i have a better option? i’ll have to take another look at some others… RAM was one thing i spent the least time on

also decided to go with the 8800 gts… instead of gtx… uo to 1550$, but that includes a 20" WS LCD Monitor too

woops… yea… im not getting that RAM… a couple things have gotten switched around… Ill post my newest selections soon

give me your old mobo

OK… setup so far…

http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813131025 MOBO

Deciding now on power supply… GTS specifies having a 28A +12V supply… but… this seems completely unreasonable seeing as how even top of the line PS’s don’t have that… do they mean 2x12V with total of at least 28A? so 2x12V @ 14A??

Don’t want to really spend >150$ on a PS. Unless I KNOW i have to

Think you need to start looking at pricewatch.com

I am looking at 6400 duo core + Asus mobo for the cost of your current mobo only.

For your current mobo and cpu from newegg, you could get a e6700 for that price.

As for PS, you may be SOL. With all these video cards using 200+ W, you will need between 500W-700W PS nowadays.

yea… the GTS will top out around 170W I believe… the GTX was up around 190ish… they recommend AT LEAST a 450W for the GTX… if I can get away with a 600-700W supply Im happy… most of those are still <150$

Ill check price watch out…

Im concerned though with customer service… don’t want to get some yahoo out in alabama selling 6700’s out of his basement… I know newegg is good about DOA, and Returns and such

Pricewatch deals with big stores on newggs level (Tiger Direct, Partswarehouse, etc. etc.) You can see which store is selling what, and choose accordingly. Plus over 90% of the places on Pricewatch have Free shipping.

That’s AT IDLE. Not when running under load.
