So finally after about four years I was able to golf at Glen Abbey. Pretty much not working and raising four kids has made this a more difficult endeavor than it should have been but it happened and it was awesome. The four of us bought a voucher off kijiji for golf so we ended up paying around $100 each instead of the $250 fee that is normally charged. We had a 9:30 tee time so I got there as early as I could with the amazing Toronto traffic so I did have some time to tour the clubhouse and use the practice facility. Everyone at the course was super friendly from the guy that picked me up at my car to the starter on the first tee they really went out of their way to make the experience pleasurable.
As we teed off there was a bit of rain coming down but we didn’t let that stop us from enjoying every second of the course. Personally I hit the ball pretty well but did find myself in a handful of the 10,000 bunkers on the course. While I don’t really know how many bunkers there are, it seemed like I found at least one on every hole.
As we made the turn, the sun started to come out and made for a great back nine which included a couple of pars and a tap in birdie on 18 so of course I left happy. Here are some of the pictures I took including my nearly impossible eagle putt out of the rough behind the green on 18.
Hole #3 - all carry to a small shallow green. I put it in the back bunker and miraculously didn’t put it in the lake with my second shot.
Hole #11 - Probably the most famous hole on the course. Drops down like 100 feet into the valley. Par 4, I made 6.
Here we are looking back up to the tee
Here I am teeing off on #16 . One of my better drives which led to par.
If you know anything about #18 at Glen Abbey, you know Tiger made birdie out of a fairway bunker with a six iron over the water. The shot is goddamn impossible.
Here is the tee on #18
Here is my eagle putt from the rough behind the green. It was so thick I almost didn’t get the ball out but I got a lucky roll to within one foot.
I would highly recommend a round of golf at Glen Abbey given the history that surrounds the course, the fact that the Open is coming back next year and that it can be had for a reasonable price.
