Anyone into RC helicopters?

I got bored the other day, decided to get a small electric RC helicopter, its fun until it hits something and shatters. but it helps my craving to fly on the really shitty days. Wasn’t sure if anyone else dorked out and bought a rc copter.

<— has an RC plane

its definantly fun

i had a rc plane that checkmy6 flew a couple times for me then i tried it and crashed

Just got a HoneyBee CP2. I can fly real well tail in, but I’m still having problems nose in. Right now the rotor is messed up from my last crash and I haven’t had time to work on it.

Any idea how much it is to get a cheap one, i always liked RC helos but the nitro ones are damn expensive.

more into rc cars i have 11 between me and my dad. helicopters and planes r sweet but very skilled to fly correctly in my understanding.

I bought a Venom NR3D and i can hover tail in ok, but decided to discharge the batt in constant speed mode, and bumped the collective. She jumped 10 feet and spashed into a metal pole, so its down for a few days. Rob, a mini electric helicopter goes for about 225 now. If you have never flown one you should get a co-axial version like an e-flight cx. Easier to fly, and a bit cheaper.

Yeah, I’ve been flying RC planes for a long time. I’ve got an IFO MK3(www.flyifo.com) with an upgraded motor/gearcase and 3 cell li-po that I can fly inverted circuits around the trees in my front yard with. Even with that level of experience the heli is taking me a long time to learn.

I know Fields Hobby on Union stocks the Blade CP, which is a real good heli.

I ordered my honeybee CP2 (basically the Blade CP but with upgraded motor, battery and blades) from www.helidirect.com.

Just a word of advice though. If you’ve never flown anything RC before, buy a PC sim first. Unlike planes which a novice has a good chance of learning to fly solo with, a heli is almost certainly going to end up a heap of worthless parts if you just take it out of the box and think you’re going to teach yourself to fly. The rotor speed is so high, and the blades so large, that when it crashes lots of delicate little parts break.

Don’t you still need a licence to fly RC Helicopters/Planes?

why would you, you dont for ultralites

I dunno, I was big into RC back in the day, I could have sworn you needed an licence for aircraft :gotme:

If not, maybe I’ll get a helo, I always wanted one.

Didn’t you always want a fast DSM too? :gotme:

I’ve done both Helis and Planes. They are EXTREMELY awsome untill they crash.

I wanna get an rc helicpter…those look badass.

I wanna get a Turbine engine R/C Heli thats a model of the Dauphin Coast Guard heli!

I think it’s the Best R/C Heli out there! Someday I’ll own one. But they are like $3000.-$5000.

JAYS do you fly with any other guys, or just on your own?

Most just fly it around my front yard. Still having some problems with it since my last crash actually. I think the main shaft is bent very slightly because it’s got a bit of a wobble in the rotor head. The blades are balanced perfectly and the flybar is good too. Probably going to order a new one and some other spare parts. I flew out a pack tonight but it’s no where near as smooth as it was.

Rick,
To fly at an AMA field you have to have an AMA model license and the insurance that comes with it. I used to have one back when I had a .46 nitro powered sport plane. Driving all the way to a flying field got to be a real pain and I got out of the hobby though. Then a couple years ago the electric parkflyers started using lithium cell phone batteries, the run times and power to weigh ratios went crazy, and I got back into it. To fly these smaller electric parkflyers you can just buy one and fly it. That IFO I posted a link to has about twice as much trust as it does weight, so it will accellerate straight up. Hold it straight up, punch the throttle, let go, and off like a rocket.

You had to go there… didn’t you…

Never got into RC planes or helicopters because I know that I would spend WAY to much time and money on them. Would still like to try someday but I don’t want to destroy anyone else’s shit. Its nothing but catch22s all over…
