Anyone live/from Virginia?

It’s going to be tough to leave NY. But, you need to do what’s best for you. I will live much better in a cheaper place where the lifestyle is much less stressful.

North Carolina or South Carolina. ive been to both places. in the peak of summer, and the dead of winter… ive also been to Virgina during both times of the year. virginia isnt bad, but i dont like the no radar detector law. not a big fan… weather isnt bad, winters are a bit colder than NC depending on which area youre in, but not as bad as NY, unless youre coastal like VA beach or some place like that.

if i were to move anywhere on the east coast, it would be North carolina.

also note, in Va if you happen to speed and get caught 15 over = 1500+ fine. :eek

it wont be so bad, its soo much better to move around IMO you meet ALOT more people etc if you grow up and stay in the SAME place all your life… ok cooll…

but damn that wont be me i would feel like im stuck in a stupid cage…

hahaha well i dont think thats a big enough deal to throw the whole ideal in the trash ? lOL

NC is that much diff than SC eh? The name scares me. :lol

That’s ridiculous regarding the fine.

I would move to NC no questions asked. Ocean. I have some family there, I love the climate and geography. Ocean!! Much cheaper for housing. OCEAN! DID I MENTION YOU CAN GO TO THE OCEAN!!?!?!?

Northern VA is different from the rest of VA. Northern VA is just a suburb of DC much like Westchester/NYC.

The rest of VA is Richmond, Norfolk, Charlottesville, and west into the mountains (country).

You can look up all the right income/costs per capita stuff, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised. It’s not Beverly Hills, but the entire mid-atlantic region is prosperous.

Housing market in North VA was shaky for awhile because they built 90% of it in the last 30 years. Rumor is its stable now. Everywhere else in the state is very similar to Albany. Housing prices in the suburb of Richmond where my sister lives are very comparable to here, maybe slightly more expensive.

Climate is beautiful. Summers are just as hot as NY, no worse. Winters are much shorter. The worst part is the first 2 weeks in Feb and its 35-40F* instead of 0-10*F here. Spring starts much earlier. You wont have the same colorful autumn that you do here. The benefits outweigh the cons for me; I hhhhate 6mo of winter up here.

Key places to live will depend on your jobs. I hate DC traffic and all of North VA. Richmond and Norfolk are the biggest cities outside DC. Charlottesville (my fav) is very historic and upscale. Think of a big Saratoga. Relatively large legal community, so Crystal might actually have good odds there.

Cons: It’s a police state. Commonwealth like PA and MA but with more money. Taxes are rough but relatively business friendly (new businesses at least).

Parts of NC are very similar without the police state part. The research triangle (Raleigh/Durham) and Asheville are my potential spots in NC.

There’s tons more I’m missing. Call me if you guys really need more info. I’m down there twice a month lately.

move to italy !

NC and SC are similar for climate (obviously) but culturally very different.

Watch that climate too. It’s a scale. I think SC is WAY to hot. VA is perfectly. NC is in the middle.

Totally.

Charleston is on the very southern end of SC, not VA.

Taxes can’t get anywhere than what I pay now.

Tax structure is different. They tax you on things you already own. It’ll shock you the first time.

BTW, I’m not a big aesthetics person, but after living in MD and being in VA all the time, you’ll realize what a total dump NY is. The colonial vibe in the area is awesome.

I lived right outside of Charlotte NC for just over a year and a half and it was quite nice. Amazing weather and 90% of the people I met had actually moved from other places, such a fast growing area that its hardly the south in most parts. Only issue with that was the roads in place could not handle the traffic load at all and there were no good old time places around, everything was new and a chain. Housing was VERY cheap though, I was only paying $650 a month in rent plus utilities to live in a gated community with a gym, a pool and that was on the edge of a lake the size of lake george. I could see the lake and almost jump in from my 3rd floor balcony. I lived in Cornelius, NC

SICK

^^ I’ve never been to Charlotte (but have heard that about the traffic). It’s on my list of places to check out before I decide on a final spot.

It’s hard to take housing/utility/etc… costs into consideration because the salary will change if we move there. There are online calculators but not sure how realistic they are.

Charlotte was quite a nice city very clean and beautiful, amazing night life with the colleges right there. It was much smaller than I had expected though, its maybe 3 square blocks of any real skyscrapers.

As far as the weather goes, I think the worst it ever got was maybe a 1/2 inch of freezing rain and ice that was gone by like 2 in the afternoon. Though it was around for long enough to wreck havoc on the idiots trying to drive on it. The summer was deff. hotter there but not by any huge degree, most locals complained about the humidity but it seemed rather tame to me?

+1. My summers in MD and VA were just as hot as NY, but winters were muuuch shorter and milder. Win-Win.

come to CT man! Moving out of NY was VERY tough for me, i have no family here in CT, I have been here for a year, and I love it so far. Everything has gotten better.

I am debating CT. I’ve been to Stanford a few times. We COULD work in NYC if we commute from CT but it’s a hike.
