Anyone wanna play XBox??

What kind of hard drive does it need? IDE? SCSI? And is there a maximum size that the Xbox can use?

its a standard IDE. The IDE channel in the xbox is only IDE-66 speeds, so all that excess buffer and RPM speed will be wasted if you got a fancy one. There is currently no size limit on the HD. It used to be limited to 137gb but that barriar has been overcome. I just put a 250gb in one last night and have a 120 in my own. Ones that put off less heat are better actually since its a rather confined space. I recommend Seagate for reliability and noise/heat reduction. Western Digitals seem to like to crap out unexpectedly. Maxtors are also decent choices for price/size ratio.

Ok for all of those who don’t know:

XBOX = pc in a box

PIII 600/650 with xx amount of ram, hard drive, network card, and usb controllers, with a nice vid card courtesy of ATi Techologies. Eventually they’ll be an xbox emulator for the PC that means you won’t need your xbox anymore.

EDIT: Link for the lazy: http://www.caustik.com/cxbx/

Exactly! Actually, its more like a laptop with a PC hard drive and DVD, but thats getting technical. It’s perfect as far as ease of development goes. There are tons of programmers out that that can work with PC architecture. But its kinda lazy on Microsoft’s part. Basically it was bought, rather than built… if you get my drift. PS2 and Gamecube are totally built from the ground up to be a game machine. Gotta respect that aspect because they do a damn good job. Either way, its the cheapest damn PC on the market. Its a 766 Intel chip with 64mb of RAM. You can even buy custom ones that run at 1400mhz and have 128mb RAM. Standard PC stuff permanently attached basically. Even the controllers are USB interface.

and it’s still the center peice of my entertainment center.

No,

The sole reason they used PC parts was simple:

  • DirectX portability
  • Development time
  • Time to market
  • Operating System already available

Technically it’s pc parts, it’s not an intel northbridge it’s an Nvidia north/southbridge combo device that they developed for the box, later know for the Nforce 2 boards.

The processor is a 733 on a 133mhz bus but it’d disquised in a BGA2 package, which is designed for laptops, but there is no 733mhz/133fsb laptop processor available.

The vid card I had mistaken marked as ATI, but I’m thinking gamecube, as it was developed by Nvidia as well.

There is a really good breakdown on it that’s technically pretty damn hard core, beyond what I would go through or have the availability to do.

I was agreeing with you. Also they used PC architecture because its flat out easier to buy the technology than create it. Sony and Nintendo spent money on research and development to make their systems unique. Microsoft simply payed for technology that anyone could get with enough $$$. All in all, PC or not, I enjoy mine, and consider it money well spent. The ATI you heard about may of been XBOX2. Alot of the rumors I hear from that say they’re making the vid chipset. It may be confirmed/denied by now I haven’t kept up to date.

I don’t really know too much about the mod chips or basically anything your talking about, but you can turn these chips on and off?

I have XBOX Live and want to continue palying online. Getting banned doesn’t sound like too much fun.

Yes, there is a dip switch on the front of the xbox connected to the mod chip that allows it to be turned on and off.

ive got the orignal xbox that has the hdd i want to swap in the new one. ill let you know :mullet:

How broke are they? Sell me one cheap, Sony will replace them if they are unopened for modding or anything like that.

Shoot me a PM on how much you want for a box… Do you have the ones with the switch to turn off the chip? I like playing games online, and Xbox live is pretty cool… I cant wait for Halo 2.
