its not just mk4ās its nearly all VWs because of the wax they inject into the chassis structure to prevent rusting from the inside out. for whatever reason my GTi never had that āold vw smellā but my jetta of the same year, with 4 times the miles smelled like a 128pack of crayons that sat out in the sahara for a month.
