I was working on this 2000 Civic Si at work a couple of days ago… So I go to drive it out of our shop and drive it down the side road just before the parking lot. I go smash VTEC in 1st and 2nd… The moment VTEC kicked in I was like: "that’s… it? I thought it was supposed to be some spectacular shit… I didn’t feel anything more than a slight increase in noise and an extra push into the seat… I was fairly disappointed… My first true-VTEC experience… Is that what Honda people love so much? More noise and turbo lag without the turbo? Sad…

Yes, you need to experience I-VTEC; the I stands for Intense obviously. That’s stage 2. Stage 3 is when you buy a VTEC controller and set it to kick in at 4000RPM. That’s when you need a massive wing to stop your car from spinning out of control. You’re probably thinking, “FWD’s can’t just spin out of control”. Well, you just haven’t seen stage 3 VTEC…except in the newspapers when a kid wraps themself around a pole…a pole so far out of the way, no decent driver would crash into.

I had a discussion with a Honda kid that was a new Skyline owner. He told me that he missed going up to 8000+ RPM. That’s what they love doing, driving at 6K in 2nd gear, making noise. If VTEC kicked in at 3000 and ended at 6K, they’d hate it. I hate the fact that you can have a fucking Civic FLOORED and you get NO power unless you drop two gears and go up to 5000RPM to get on VTEC. I’d much prefer getting my power at. 3K over 5K anyday.
